Weather-wise, the day on which I went from Hiroshima to Miyajima was the most depressing one during my first Japan trip. While the ferry passage had already felt rather solemn and lonely, as if embarking into a mysterious wet and cloud-engulfed world of temples and shrines, the stay on the island of Miyajima itself was turned into a rather bleak affair by constant rain ranging on a scale between "heavy" and "torrential". However, this didn't stop me - and the folks pictured in this shot - from taking pictures at this site. The wet wood created some nice reflecting effect.

This photo shows an impression taken at Itsukushima Shrine, with Miyajima's famous floating torii gate in the background. The gate has existed since 1168, though its current instance dates back to 1875. It is built of camphor wood, is about 16 meters high, and was built in a four-legged (yotsu-ashi) style to provide additional stability. The gate only appears to be floating at high tide; when the tide is low, the gate is surrounded by mud and can be accessed on foot from the island. It is common practice for visitors to place coins in the cracks of the legs of the gate and make a wish. Gathering shellfish near the gate is also popular at low tide. At night, powerful lights on the shore illuminate the gate.

Hello Norbert,

A rain day with a purple umbrella, but with a wonderful reflections on the wooden floor.
The woden floor create nice depth, also the statue depth in background care for a pleasant image.
Very well done, TFS.

Best regards,
John.

Hi Norbert

I leave Korea on Thursday. I remember a previous Miyajima shot you uploaded, which was just as good as this, if not better. There are some grain or artefacts? in the sky but that's easily removed with some quick pp work. I like the fg reflections in the wet wood. Perfect blue skies during the working week here in Korea, but overcast & raining, for 6 weekends in a row. Sigh.

Hi Norbert,
not an easy task to make a nice shot under such heavy weather but yours works pretty well with those patches of colors and the reflections in the wood. Beyond that, I think there's a real atmosphere coming out from this picture. Is it me or is there a slight tilt to the left?
Well done anyhow.

Philippe

Norbert,
quite the interesting choice to go back in your files and come up with this rather grey and triste impression. I remember very well another post from this moment. I guess it was a horizontal frame. The colored elements in red, the shrine and the lady, as well as the photographing person in purple makes the real attraction on this image and worth the presentation.

Hallo Norbert!
Despite the heavy rain, the colours are very good, making nice contrast. I like the details! Nice composition!

Just what I missed on my days resently on the Faroe Islands: Someone to keep an umbrella over the camera on a reiny day. Good idea and an original way to see this old structure out in the lake..

Hi dear Norbert
Not simple to make such composition with a hard weathe.
But it's a very good composition with a very good management of the exposure.
Friendly regards.
