Ameyoko Market. If visiting Tokyo, this place is a must. The name Ameyoko derives from the days of American occupation following World War II when American goods, particularly jeans were sold here on the black market.
Since those dark days the area has developed into a typical Tokyo street market or bazaar if you prefer, with shops and stalls selling almost anything you can imagine, ranging from fresh seafood to sports goods, shoes to watches and jewelry, and hardware to clothing.
Situated amongst the railway arches beneath the Japan Railways Yamanote Line, this bustling street market lies between Ueno and Okachimachi stations with the street vendors trying to outshout each other and where prospective buyers are expected to barter for a bargain. It is the ideal place to pick up a souvenir.
Comments welcome and thanks for stopping by.
