Berlin's new Hauptbahnhof (central railway station) was opened on May 2006. A vast multi-level structure, partly in a tunnel, it forms the centre of Berlin's new railway network which has been under construction since the city's reunification. The station is built on the site of the former Lehrter Bahnhof, which was damaged during World War 2 and subsequently demolished. Hauptbahnhof has all the facilities you would expect of a new, modern station. However, it does not have any luggage lockers; instead there is only a left-luggage facility with a luggage-screening policy, which means waiting times should be expected when checking baggage in or out. (For a decent selection of coin-operated luggage lockers, try Zoo Station). Hauptbahnhof has been described as a "shopping center with a rail connection", and there is certainly no shortage of retail facilities (see list below).
