Rural Churches [6]

Churches are among my favourite subjects for photography, for several reasons. Architecture is one thing, history another. Besides, many of them are very photogenic!

In rural Norway the common building material for churches used to be wood, usually timber for most of those built during the 18th and 19th century. The main church in the municipality of Melhus as we see here is an exception.

This church is built on a small hill overlooking the surrounding farmland, and it is visible from almost everywhere in the parish. The construction was started in the early 1890ties, after the older stone church was decided demolished and replaced by a new one. Work was finished in 1893. The church is quite big for a rural church, as it seats nearly 1000 persons.

Melhus is a neighbouring municipality to Trondheim, the largest city in Central Norway. Christianity has long traditions in this part of the country, following the battle of Stiklestad where King Olav Haraldsson defeated the pagan army in the year 1030 and thus marked the beginning of a new era in the history of religion in Norway. King Olav was killed in the battle, and his remains were buried where we now find Nidarosdomen, a by far more famous church compared to the one in the picture…

C'est une très belle photo,Pablo! Les couleurs et la lumière sont parfaites et cette église est très belle, différente des églises en bois debout que l'on rencontre souvent en Norvège

pablo,
great use of light ofcourse. the composition is classic, inclusion of this old tree on the frame was a great idea. color contrast and saturation is fine to the degree that we can explore all the details here.

Bonjour Pablo

Hi Pablo,
This structure is a credit to the architect ... they don't build this structure anymore nowadays ... too costly.
I like the way you framed the church using the big tree ... well composed. Excellent colour quality and the tombstones gives it a good perspective. Well done!

Hi Pablo,
very nice old church, I like how the trees and lamp are included to composition...great light and natural colours...well done Pablo!!! I like your church series!!

Hi Pablo,
This is an interesting neo-gothic architecture, a little different than the style used in Czechia in the late 19th century. I like colours and sharpness. I don't like the composition is rather out of ballance due to central placement of the church and the tree that makes the left side heavier.

Thanks,
Marek

Hi Pablo,
Great shot with perfect colours and light management. I like this stone church so different from the ones you've been posting, it reminds me a bit of the architecture and rooftops used by the french on their houses and castles.

A very beautiful view of the Melhus kirke!
The image looks amazing!

Hi Pablo,
I also remember this interesting church from a post of yours, about one year ago...Good POV from a distance, that shows us well, the surrounded vegetation and the cemetery. Nice to see the detail of the post lamp at right and the blue sky enhance the image, as we know. The lighting is beautiful and make those textures stand out nicely.
Greetings,
Ricardo

Hi Pablo,

Like this picture, your good POV and a nice light allow you to capture this church in its simple majesty. Just four main colours: blue, green, grey and red, but what a pleasant sight! I like your work on the Norwegian churches, you really make a good tribute to them with your views.

Cheers
Alexander

Hi Pablo,

Very beautiful church with impressive roof. Pretty blue sky. Great clarity. Best wiahes - Danilo

Hi Pablo,
This is a well litt beautiful church, shining brightly in the broad day sun. The contours become more vivid with the beautiful blue sky. The inclusion of tree on the left side increases the beauty of the composition.

A pious church and beautiful afternoon colors. The RIP scene does not trouble but pacifies the sight. And the X-like diagonals - one of the almost phantom clouds and the other - of the tree, continued by the sloping contour of the church add the drama of the celestial against the earthly...
Good work, Pablo!

Hope this doesnt happen to the environs of the churches you have photographed.

This is a gorgeous church! I find architecture interesting too. There's usually interesting detail and workmanship in these old buildings.

Wonderful composition, colours and detail. I think the oldest buildings in Canada (made by the Europeans) are 300 years old and are probably in Quebec City or Old Montreal. TFS Janice

Hello Pablo
This one looks more like a cathedral than a rural church because its architecture is so sophisticated and it stands proudly by the graveyard and its protective tree.
Best regards.
Robert

Beautiful country scene, with the old stone church, with its red windows and door on the BG of the blue sky and that special quality of the light--a northern light.

Hi Pablo,

I am surprised by the number of people whom this superb church can accomodate. It is a very beautiful architecture which the good light highlights well. The natural colors are very pleasant. I appreciate much the framing of the building in his environment vegetable which gives a good contrast. Pretty and interesting photograph, thank you for the instructive note.

With all my friendships and very good Sunday,

Jean-Charles
