A picture I expected to post latter within a travelogue on my 2008 Tall Ships' Race on the Irish sail training ship Asgard II, from Maloy to Bergen, and Bergen to Den Helder.
But the circunstances oblige me to do something earlier: after sustaining a waterflow which could not be contained, Asgard II was abandonned by her crew at about 4 am this morning near Belle Ile, in Brittany, and sunk latter in the morning. Everybody on board is safe, but the ship is lost.
So my 600 or so pictures from last summer are the last ones I will have taken on that ship, unless she can be salvaged.

Extract from RTI news this morning:
Thursday, 11 September 2008 17:35
The sail training vessel Asgard II has sunk 20 miles off the coast of France in the Bay of Biscay. The ship was lost at 8.25am local time (7.25am Irish time) 20 nautical miles from the French coast, southwest of Belle-Île-en-Mer.
Asgard II had earlier been abandoned after taking on water. The alarm was raised shortly before 2.30am this morning. The five crew and 20 trainees, most of them Irish, took to the ship's life-rafts.
The ship's captain, Colm Newport, said that the vessel was abandoned in an orderly fashion and with no injuries. He said that all 25 people were off the ship in four or five minutes, and that they stayed alongside the stricken vessel while communicating with search and rescue. Within 20 minutes from the initial alarm, they had moved the life-rafts away from the Asgard II, which had water up to its deck at that stage.
The crew and trainees were rescued by a French coastguard vessel. They were taken to a hotel on the nearby island of Belle-Île-en-Mer.
Mr Newport said that he has no idea what caused the ship to sink, adding that it would be foolish to speculate. He said that there was a 'sudden ingress of water', which caused the vessel to lose stability.
All those on board were now in contact with 'their people at home', and were in warm clothes, being looked after well by the people on Belle-Île. However, they had been through a traumatic event.
The Irish Ambassador to France, Anne Anderson, is travelling from Paris to Belle-Île to meet the crew and trainees.

The operation of the Asgard II, which is a civilian-run traditionally rigged sailing ship, is run by a voluntary committee chaired by the Minister for Defence.

And what was to be just a picture to remember a happy moment now becomes a very sad posting to me....

Salut Emmanuel

Salut,Braca

Hi Emmanuel,
One of your best sailing shots I think. The weather is good providing clear blue sky. Angle of the ship gives a good idea of not being on steady terrain. Lots of detail including the curving sail. And I like the shore in the background too.
Kari

Bonjour Emmanuel

Hello Emmanuel,
very impressive beautiful photo! But the story of the ship is very sad... It seems to me, ships are like human beings: they have their own life, they have their own fate.
I like tall ships a lot, I've seen many of them in Sweden.
best regards,
Elena

Hello Emmanuel,

As I understand this sailing is not without an element of danger, as a vessel can sink with no warning and obvious reason!
The image tells this is not one of the largest, and here seen in fine wind southbound on the coast of Norway...
Excellent details and the fine light renders great colours!

Greetings,
Pablo -

Bonjour Emmanuel,

Roger

Hello Emile.
This marvellous sailing photo has a sad story to accompany it. Your personal involvement makes this a poignant posting. The breeze was obviously quite stiff on this day, and your photo, beautifully exposed, captures all the excitment of sailing a vessel like this. The viewpoint was superb, and the form of the sail really gives the photo a fine shape against the verticals of the masts and rigging. Thanks for your very good note.
Regards,
Andrew

Bonjour Emmanuel ,
Bel hommage .

It is very sad to know what happen to you and the beautiful ship. But I am happy you and the crew got rescued and are all well and safe on firm land. I do not know whether or not it has been possible but the question is: did you manage any photos of the dramatic moment?
This one is wonderful, for its sharpness, composition and colours. The view of the coast line is beautiful and the tilt of the mast shows well the ship stability at sea. Well done.
Antonio

Hi Emmanuel,

What a bad news. The Asgard II was a beautiful ship, with her remarkable green colour. I do have 4 pictures of her in Den Helder. I will post one of those pictures in the WS. It’s a pity that the Viking woman in the figurehead isn’t sailing any longer around the seas of the world.

Groet Rob

A happy picture, a sad story...
shipwrecks are always very traumatic for those who passed throught it. I can imagine your reaction when you heard the bad news...
You really choose a bright fine picture to commemorate this lovely ship.
With sympathetic feelings,
Donato

Bonjour Emmanuel,
This is a stunning action shot of this beautiful ship under sail. What a great idea to go toward to the bow and shoot back at the boat to include the foresail as the boat ran downwind. I also think showing land in the background enhances the photo. Color and detail is splendid too.
