To tyro: Bright Lights
 

Hi John - yes, I've thought about that light a lot while looking at this shot. Can't decide if I like it or dislike it - I wonder if the shot would be unbalanced without it, though I much prefer the natural tones of daylight from the right. Also, the ceiling of the stair - which allows us to see the triangular apex - would be dark without it. An interesting question to ponder!
