Hello Gert,
The carpets look inviting to linger for a while.
No idea whether at the time it would have been allowed as a foreigner to sit on it.
Maybe if you have a chat with one of the men first.
The street scene obviously looks very appealing to a visitor from the west.
You've probably said it before, but I don't remember. Was contact with the local population easy in Afghanistan? Did you have many language problems there?
Best regards, Paul

Thank you Paul for these comments.
I had surprisingly few problems in Afghanistan (except for a robbery). People were extremely helpful and hospitable and far more persons than I had expected could speak some English. I had picked up some extremely rudimentary Persian, which also was to some use. I actually found it more easy to get around in Afghanistan than in Iran. Best regards, Gert |

Thanks Gert,
I was in Iran many years later than you (in 1996). But never had any problem with travelling and no communication problems. It's surprising that in such a remote country as Afghanistan, at least at the time, quite a lot of people spoke English. I had a similar experience in 1988 in North Yemen. Unbelievable that everywhere there was at least one person who spoke English. Kind regards, Paul |
