Hello Jorge, Nice picture of this monument but the note is most interesting. I do not know anything about the history of Brazil, so I read your notes with a big interest. As I remember, Lagos in Portugal was the place from where the slaves were sent. A black period in history. I read on Wikipedia about Machado de Assis and indeed, he is regarded as a black writer. I also remember that Brazil is a quite unique mixture of even four races, and there are special names for the per cent of each race.
I like this original column very much.
Best regards MAlgo
PS. The parents of Machado were Francisco José de Assis, the son of freed slaves, and Maria Leopoldina da Câmara Machado, a Portuguese washerwoman from the Azores. So it was a father who was black.

thanks for the note explaining the mother was portuguese, not the father. I guess I did that because in the case of Aleijadinho the father is really the portuguese. take care jorge |

I read also about Aleijadinho. The funny thing in Wikipedia is that there is a controversy if he has ever existed. But then, who was the author of the sculptures?
