Photographer's Note

This is a shot I took yesterday as I strolled along Bournemouth beach. The structure is a groyne. Groyne's are a low wall or timber barrier built out into the sea, at regular intervals along the beach to check tidal erosion and the drifting of sand.

Bournemouth has seven miles of sandy beaches in total and is a popular tourist resort. It is also known for it's international language school and it's University of Arts and Media.

I lived in Bournemouth as a young man. I used to walk out of my flat onto the beach and swim for hours. I also used to enter fun runs to raise money for charity and was once picked up by the police on my way to the start of such a run for wearing nothing more than women's underwear. They said I would attract the wrong sort of attention, so gave me a lift to the start line for my own safety! I thought it a little ironic given their uniforms and I didn't have handcuffs or phallus like truncheons to go with my outfit!

Enjoy.
