Enkhuizen

This is a photo from the city of Enkhuizen, which is located in the region West-Frisia in the province of Noord-Holland. As one of main ports of the VOC, the Dutch East-India Company, it was one of the country's most important towns in the 17th century, the Dutch Golden Age. Nowadays, the city has got about 18,000 inhabitants. It is located on the shores of Lake IJsselmeer.

Seen here is the historic town gate, called the Drommedaris, which means Dromedary. Construction started in 1540, which makes it the oldest building in the city. It is located next to the entrance to the Old Harbour.

Hello Lars,
This is a part of your country I haven't seen, but obviously there are interesting sights in this city too. This gate is highly impressive, really a stunning building, and the bridge connecting it with the city is also very attractive. It's a nice photo with fine depth and a few persons making the view livelier.

Hello Lars,

This is a pretty town and nicely accessed, in your photograph, by the canal.
The gatehouse is a curious building, quite different from anything I have seen before but, therefore, is immensely interesting. I am confused though, a dromedary has one hump whilst this appears to have two!
The weather was lovely and enabled you to take maximum advantage of the colours and the pedestrians.

Het bruggetje is typisch en herkenbaar, maar het grote gebouw links vind ik bizar en origineel. Een mooi geheel, weer een Nederlands plaat(s)je dat ik niet kende.

Hello Lars,
The composition has a pleasing balance to it as well as encompassing many interesting elements. The canal makes an effective lead-line guiding the viewer into the scene. Very agreeable lights and colours and excellent clarity.

Learnt something new on TE today, Lars, info. superbly given, and you show an immaculate pic. of the old gate.
Depth along teh canal, a bright daylight sight, and people on both sides of the canal.

The length of the canal is giving depth to the composition. The point of view is showing the details of the buildings and of the houses. The good luminosity is enhancing the beauty of the colours. Have a nice day.

Hello Lars,

The little boy in front of the motor bike appears to have his eye on the 2 small girls seated in the park. Good sharpness and well composed with the clocktower well positioned on the vertical 1/3 axis. The drawbridge makes an unusual focal point. Tfs!

Hallo Lars,
Een zeer merkwaardig gebouw dat fungeerde als stadspoort. Die functie zie ik er wel in maar die toren is toch wel heel bijzonder.
Het kanaal ernaast, de ophaalbrug en de huizen aan de overkant ogen dan wel typisch Hollands.
Op de nieuwste versie van TE vertoont de stadspoort over heel zijn breedte lange eigenaardige lijnen die niet terug te vinden zijn op de betaversie. Vreemd.
Je foto is mooi helder en scherp, heeft een uitstekende diepte en compositie.

I do not see anything that resembles a camel about that building, but maybe it's not obvious from this angle. Your photo is very pleasant, though. Red roofs against an immaculately blue sky with the canal leading the eyes towards them make for a cheerful photo.

Met deze Drommedaris laat je toch maar mooi weer iets zien van onze roemruchte VOC mentaliteit. Maar had je nou niet even kunnen wachten toto die hond uitgeplast was. Maar verder een mooie reclame voor Enkhuizen.

now that is one cool looking Gate. I wish my city had a gate like this! haha

were there other walls surrounding the town? there must have been, and where have they gone?

Interesting historical information from this fascinating location and a great view so amazingly bright. Well captured of the marvellous architecture which gives the image a great visual impact with nice lead in, first rate detail and strong inviting colours. I find the draw-bridge interesting - a similar type can be found in Jakarta Indonesia - Old Batavia VOC's former Crown Jewel in its heyday...

Dag Lars I just had a walk in Enkhuisen by means of Google Earth and loitered a while around the old Drommedaris that I first mistook for an unusually-designed cathedral showing its main entrance. So I knew it's rather the Cultureel Centrum located by the modest draw bridge over the harbour entrance. Nice visual balance provided by the rightmost buildings.
