‘A break in La Serena’
Chile is a vast and especially elongated country. The distances between the different places to visit are very large.
Fortunately, the country has an excellent bus network. Very comfortable (even luxurious) buses provide the intercity traffic. If you have only three weeks for the entire trip, you're occasionally obliged to travel by night bus. As concerns the comfort and the sleeping, no problem at all.
Yet I prefer not to travel in a bus longer than one night or one day. Therefore on a really long distance I had to look for a place of interest to break the journey.
La Serena was such a place, a not too big and pleasant city and interesting enough to stay for a while.
BTW, isn’t ‘La Serena’ a beautiful name?
It surely isn’t one of Chile's top destinations although in the summer months (January and February) its long beaches do attract quite a lot of tourists. In July however everyday life has taken its course again and you will mainly meet only the residents.
In the center I saw fairly beautiful architecture, mostly from the late 1940s.
This time I had eaten in the restaurant that you see on the picture. Unlike in the fancy restaurant in Iquique (one of the previous pictures) my budget allowed it here. I can’t remember the main meal but the fish soup was delicious.
If you're interested, there are two more pictures of La Serena in the workshop.

Hello Paul,
La Serena looks like a charming and colorful city. I like this POV; it feels like we are sitting on the balcony with you. With the open wooden doors on the left, and the church on the right, it's a lovely composition. I like the WS photos, too.

Ciao Paul

Groet, Rob

Hello Paul,
It's nice to hear that your budget allowed you more than international hamburger chains. I wouldn't mind having a meal at any of these green and orange tables with the view of that square and the church. The restaurant's terrace is like a photo inside the photo with very fine depth, whereas the "other" photo has a very nice view of the square. The workshops give me an impression of a quite nice town, perfectly suitable for a short visit. Fine architecture and almost only locals filling the streets sounds ideal.
Kind regards,
Gert

Dag Paul,
Heel mooi gedaan, bedankt.
Groeten,
John.

Bonjour Paul,

Hi Paul
The outdoor al fresco dining area at left adds a European flavour. Good sharpness and excellent color and saturation. The clocktower at right provides an excellent focal point. Tfs!

Hello Paul,
A break is very important in our travel. We tend to want to do and see so much as possible, but we have to take care and rest so we don't get sick when travel. Beautiful shot from the second floor of the restaurant with great light.

Hi Paul, Indeed, traveling in Chile is comfortable. To go to the far south you need to use the plane. The buses coche cama are also good solution, you can sleep well, as in bed. In Argentina, they served meals and drinks also. But it is worth to have a stop to see something off the beaten track. MNice restaurant on the long balcony with the view of the market.

Hello Paul,
This is like a split shot; we have the dining balcony, which could also be called the viewing balcony (which I'm sure you used) and the city below. They also provide contrasts of colour as well as activities.
You have incorporated good guides, a fine sense of perspective and some attractive, local details.
The weather looked perfect for photography, clear skies and long shadows!
You sound to have had the most enjoyable and interesting exploration of this huge country!
My warm regards,
Bev :-)

Good evening Paul,
We do not see many photo on TE from rural and remote town in Chile, went to Google-maps to find this place. Looks as a charming place, easy going daily-life seems through your picture - and in contrast a beautiful set of tables in green on the balcony.
All 3 pic.s' are interesting learning about this town.

Hi Paul,
Beautiful presentation of this attractive town. I like your perspective through the arcades with restaurant in the foreground. The tables have incredibly bright colors selected for the table cloths but it does makes the scene even more eye catching.
You have nicely combined those two worlds here.
Interesting note as well. I cannot afford to go to Chile right now but your notes may be valuable as soon as I win the lottery ☺
Excellent work,

Bonsoir Paul,

Hello Paul,
I like all of your pictures from La Serena very much, you have composed them in superb ways, they look elegant and have been adjusted to the layout of the different sceneries as well. There's an intriguing layout of perspectives in your main post, amazing definition near and far, very compelling colours. The sunshine makes each setting look so vivid. Congratulations and thank you!
All the best, have a great evening,
Ourania
