Photographer's Note
Bach or Buxtehude
23 June 2010. Having sailed through the Kiel Canal, we docked for the day in Lübeck, Germany. That evening Seabourn Odyssey would set sail on a trajectory that would take us to Tallinn, Estonia; St. Petersburg, Russia; Helsinki, Finland and Stockholm, Sweden. In Lübeck one of my closest friends from university days, Heinz Honeck, fellow physics student and fellow soccer/football player, met us with his wife, Ute. We spent the day traipsing along the Old Town area of the city. Three hundred years earlier, the immortal Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750) had walked almost 160 km from his home to listen to his personal hero, the Danish-German organist and composer, Dieterich Buxtehude (1637-1707).
Living statues take up their posts early each morning in a variety of European cities. I’ve seen Leonardo in Florence, Casanova in Venice, and here in Lübeck was a citizen from the city's Baroque days. Of course, I was happy capturing the magic moment, where the little girl stood, wondering, “Bach or Buxtehude?”
I cropped the photo in a golden rectangle, 1:1.618, a ratio that works well for great compositions in music, painting and photography.
I apologize about the ghostly red marks above the baton in the earlier version posted. I noticed them only after submitting the photo yesterday. After cleaning the background, I am posting the photo again, alas, without the ghostly marks.
I dedicated this photo to Heinz and Ute Honeck, as well as to our own TE friend, Harriet Kaeler, who has treated us to photos of this part of the world for years.

Merhaba Bülent Bey,
Altın oran gerçekten şık bir kare oluşturmuş. Küçük kızın ve sokak sanatçısının vücutsal formları gayet hoş. Işıklı ve gölgeli bölgeler ile dengeli bir foto.
Tebrikler,
Selamlar.

Hola dear Bulent
Not notice the red marks because of the great color combination of the scene, grey and golden, repeated in the good frame
Like also the kind way the statue seems to watch the cute girl
well taken, at the right moment, congrats and warm regards

Hi Bulent
The world is in our hands!! - the first thought that sprang to mind when viewing this excellent piece of work. The people that do this are quite amazing but never understood how they manage to stand still for so long. You've caught a great expression on the 'statue's' face and also you managed to portray this little girl in total astonishment mode! although we cant see her face which is easy imagine- jaw dropping, i think the expression is.. This is wonderful balance crisp shot and lovely how my eye keeps getting drawn to both characters & and the 'powerful' stick and by darkening the bg helps the subject matter stick out even more here!! Great candid you've captured the moment superbly. Congrats
Best regards

Hello Bulent
Old meets new in more than one way in this fine composition. Barock meets modern way of life, older gentlemen meets younger generation ...
The almost monochrome composition is enhanced by the golden fringes of the states dress and the girls golden hair and that makes it very pleasant to look at.
have a great Sunday

Hello Bulent,
Nice capture of the little girl wandering past the mystery musician. I like the black background, and the man's costume. I see figures like this a lot here in NYC, but never dressed as classical musicians; they are usually the Statue of Liberty or a ballerina. :-) I hope all is well with you and Carol Jean.

We have those statutes in Las Vegas also, it's amazing how they can stay in one position for a long time. The little girl seems curious. Nice capture of this gentleman with good lighting and good details. Well done, tfs.

Howdy Bulent,
Intriguing blend and contrast with the young blond girl wearing grey similar to the Bach living statue, hers covered in hearts, Bach's with regal gold trim.
We are envious of your travels and wish you all the best for future adventures,
Sincerely,
Ray

Hello Bulent,
The light shades of the statue and girl are so effective against the black BG. Excellent lighting and exposure. A nice interaction shown he
Kind Regards, Annre in a cleverly composed and non-cluttered image.

Selamlar Bülent Bey,
If I hadn't seen living statues elsewhere, I would have thought this was a well decorated metal statue. Well seen and rendered, TFS.

Hello Bulent,
An interesting question - who could this be? Bach or Buxtehude? The dress of the man does not really seem to resemble that in any portraits of J.S. Bach which I have seen and, as far as I know, only one portrait of Buxtehude exists. So my money would probably have to be on Buxtehude!
Be that as it may, this is a delightful and beautiful candid photograph of this elegant "statue" as he smiles benevolently upon the little girl with golden hair passing before him, the colour of her hair nicely matching the trimmings of his coat.
A very finely composed photograph with lovely light and colours, perfect exposure and exquisite details and sharpness.
Beautiful!
Kind Regards,
John.
P.S. But are you not underestimating Bach's stoicism and stamina? I had always believed that the young Bach had actually walked all the way from Arnstadt to Lübeck, a distance in excess of 400 kilometres or 250 miles. But perhaps historians have exaggerated the facts.

Hello Bulent,
I like the interaction between the two characters in this composition, the light sets them off beautifully and the sharpness on them is precise and natural. The environment is quite neutral and leads us to focus entirely on the intriguing encounter. I wonder if the statue's smile is due to the little girl's scrutiny. Congratulations and thank you!
All the best, have a great day,
Ourania

Merhaba Bulent. The coordinated colours make it look a if both characters have come from the same land of make-believe and it's appropriate that her fabric sports little hearts befitting this sweet encounter between artist and admirer (puzzled as she might be.) Excellent timing, wonderful light and details. A sunny gift from you to TE members. Selam. Klaudio.
