Se Cathedral at Dark, a photo from Porto, North

Photographer's Note

One of the highlights of Porto, is to spend some time in Se Cathedral. Its so large, and because its positioned up on a hill, its basically seen from almost all areas of the city.

I wanted to show a different point of view, rather than just showing the Cathedral itself. The street on the right, and the steps leading upwards made for a beautiful composition - at least it does in my humble opinion :)

It was quite late in the evening, so there weren't many people around town, just me and the buildings!
Sometimes I prefer it that way haha. If I had taken this photo during the day it wouldn't have the same atmosphere or mood, I like the tones and shadows.

Hello Craig,

You mention atmosphere in your notes and that is just what you have captured here; it is quiet, it is serene, it is mysterious.
The amber illuminated, narrow street, curves through the darkness to lead sinuously to the silvered towers of the cathedral.
It's avery well composed scene.

Did you feel safe carrying a camera and tripod through the lonely, dark streets alone?

Hello Craig,
Believe it or not, but I like this even though there are no people in the street ;-). You write that you wanted to show more than just the cathedral itself, which is also what I prefer from photos of buildings. You complemented the church well by including the empty street. The warm light and the abandoned cars create a great atmosphere which contrasts dramatically with the black sky and the bright light shining on the church.

An image that is indeed full of atmosphere and very well composed. I like the contrast in tone between the warmly lit area in the bottom part of the image and the cooler light around the cathedral.

You probably took this photo late at night, because there is such a peaceful atmosphere, a very nice shot from a good POV, you have included not only the cathedral but also a sleepy street

Hi Craig,
Excellent angle for showing this cathedral. Those staris add strong sense of third dimension. Floodlight on the cathedral has clearly different tone than old fashioned lamps on the street.
This was one of the first places I went in Porto. It was morning and quite foggy. By the time it cleared I was already down by the riverside.

Hello Craig, Nice night picture of the cathedral in Porto. I was in Portugal with the organized group (wrrrrr) and we had a hotel somewhere "in the vicinity" of the town, it means the whole late afternoon and night was wasted in the uninteresting place. Never again!
Nice light, excellent composition, beautiful mood.

Hi Craig,

The street leads my eye toward the tower which is giving depth to the scene. Using a tripod and probably a slow shutter speed is showing the details of the cathedral at night. It also has a special effect on the colours. Well done, have a nice day.

I like a lot the rustic style of cathedrals of porto and lisbon. it is ever a pleasure to see images of them. this angle is perfect and the nocturne view is amazing. TFS the beauty of the area.
