Photographer's Note

Close up view of 13th century double azure coloured tiled domes with their high drums decorated with monumental Kufic patterns, at Shahi Zinda necropolis or the avenue of mausoleum complex in Samarkand. This exterior decor appears to have withstood both the elements and the passage of time extremely well, and such artistry, everything is made by hand and pleasing on the eye.

The ancient Uzbek master craftsmen knew the secret of making coloured ceramic glaze made from secret desert plant, the dyes of which keep their original deep colours for centuries and never fade till today.

The procedure was a closely guarded secret and never fall into the hands of Commie Hammer & Sickle. I was informed that by the 1960's there was only one aging ceramist who remembered the traditional method.
