Piazza Salimbeni, a photo from Siena, Tuscany

Photographer's Note

Arriving at night from Salerno via Naples, Rome and a detour from the main rail line to Florence, this scene was too good to ignore when looking for a hotel. It's a statue of Sallustio Bandini at Piazza Salimbeni, several blocks north of Siena Tower and the main Piazza del Campo. The lighting is impressive at night but the square looks fairly ordinary by day.

Hello Chris,
Maybe this looks so ordinary at day so I don't remember this place. But the nightly illuminations create a great atmosphere and the buildings are certainly fine enough even for daylight. The persons sitting by the statue add the important human touch. You handled the exposure well.

Hello Chris, indeed the lighting at night creates a lovely impression of the buildings.
The presence of the people by the statue adds life and scale to the scene.

Hi Chris
The Gothic building behind that statue is the world's oldest Monte dei Paschi bank, founded in 1472. The country develops rapidly only when there is a strong bank. Without capital, commerce and industry cannot develop. By the way, Chris' picture 10 years ago had a strong terrible green feeling, but recently it feels like I'm pursuing clarity.

Hello Chris,

The lighting is indeed amazing by night! It brings out all the details of the walls and windows of the surrounding buildings.
I just love the focal statue and seated figures. The statue looks like a ghostly figure sneaking up on the guys, who are totally unaware!

A great view of this almost empty square. The three people at the foot of the statue are well included. The golden lights on the fa鏰des are fantastic and make the details of the architecture look terrific.

there is something charming about this scene.
I like the tourists sitting around a square but here they are sitting so neatly next to each other and that works somehow humorously.

You are right. I looked back through my Siena photos and found one with people sitting around the same fountain in 2002 - not one I've ever thought of posting on TE.
This good night photo, however is very atmospheric, good colour and detail and the people sitting under the statue add a human touch.

Hi Chris,

The lighting is well done here, emphasising the textures of brickwork and design. I'm surprised there were only three people in the photo. The statue base makes a convenient bench to sit on.

This is definitely an attractive night view. The warm lighting illuminating the piazza is lovely, and so is the architecture. I also like the glass in the arched windows on the second and third floors. The people sitting at the foot of the statue are an added bonus, too. Take care!

I don't remember this place. yes, the golden light added a special flavor to the compo and these fa鏰des. I was thinking about the buildings of Brasilia city, that are amazing at night.
