Photographer's Note

Lake Toba is the caldera of a dormant volcano that last exploded 75,000 years ago. There are still hot springs & sulphur around the shores of Samosir Island in the middle of the lake. Taken from a speeding bus on a bumpy road with a high shutter speed of 1/500 second.

Nice overlooking view point, I like here very much the contrast between the dark lake water and the hills, their color being much more luminous due to the sun falling onto them.
The shore ondulation and the hill reflection are nice too, the quality of this scan is excellent.

Oh Lake Toba, my colleague that I was with in Melaka told me this was the first place I should visit if I ever go to Sumatra. Fantastic shot to have got from a speeding bus. Is this on the island?

two things are the best here, chris: pov (overview of the whole region, beautiful), and light - creating contrasted, saturated plans; great panorama

A lovely landscape photo. The lake is nicely positioned on the shot, and we have some nice contrast between the lake, relections and the land.

Just a shame that we have the plant poking into the bottom left corner.

for a bumpy shot, it's really sharp Chris. When I was there fires were burning in the backcountry and haze was everywhere. Great color and clarity here though...

Beautiful landscape. Very imposing. Besides the arch in the shoreline made by the hill which is a very good detail, the key to this image is the inclusion of the thin stripe of land in the bottom which creates the feeling of us being there. Very nice colors.

Hello Chris,

My father was so impressed by his travel to Lake Toba that he decided to name the family English Springer Spaniel after it. He and his friend hired an old canoe and crossed the lake for a few days, and tells me it is some of the best scenery in Sumatra. It looks like Lake Taupo in NZ in many respects, and was created in the same volcanic way. The colour of that water is sensational. I hope I get to visit someday. I wonder how much it has changed over the past 15 or so years? Excellent scan. TFS.
