Photographer's Note
Pietrabbondante is a comune (municipality) in the Province of Isernia in the Italian region Molise, located about 30 kilometres (19 mi) northwest of Campobasso and about 20 kilometres (12 mi) northeast of Isernia.
Pietrabbondante's earliest known inhabitants were the Samnites, who arrived in Pietrabbondante in the 6th century BC. Many historians believe that it was home of the assemblies of the Samnite federal government. The Samnites called the place "Bovianum" but this only lasted for a few centuries, its demise the result of defeats in the Samnite wars as well as the site's ultimate destruction at the hands of Lucius Cornelius Sulla (89 BC). Pietrabbondante then became part of the Roman colony located in Sannio and was documented by Pliny the Elder. The Romans called the town "Bovianum Vetus", the early role of which is little known. It became, however, a center of vital importance; when the Romans conquered the Samnites, Pietrabbondante became a place of reference for checking the Alto Molise.
The Samnite town stretched for just over six hundred meters; nevertheless, the area remains rich in archaeological material. Excavations in the 1840s brought to light sections of marble statues, clay tools, coins, weapons, etc. A very notable archeological find is the temple and the theater built of polygonal limestone that is a rare Italian example of retaining a Greek structure built by the Samnites.
The theater-temple complex is located on the outskirts of Pietrabbondante about 966 metres (3,169 ft) above sea level, next to another small temple with arcaded shops from a previous era (200 BC). To build it, the Samnites situated two terraces along the side of the mountain, but at different levels on a single axis. The top two buildings housed the temple and side porches. The overall size of the area is 55 by 90 metres (180 by 295 ft).
THE THEATER consists of two elements: the auditorium and the building stage, which are linked together by two stone arches. The auditorium is capable of holding up to 2,500 spectators and has excellent acoustics. Each of the seats was created from a single stone block with the dorsal elegantly thrown backwards; signs at both ends of each row reserved them for judges, priests, and so on. On both sides of the orchestra, retaining walls of the embankment (analemma) end with atlases carved in stone (like the Odeon of Pompeii, however, the material is made of soft tuff). The entire embankment is supported by large semicircular and polygonal blocks processed by cutting without regular contours.
BENVENUTI A TEATRO

Hi Luciano
Highly impressive archaeological shot from an elevated vantage point with a great view across the Theatre of the ancient city, some good features of the distant background and the awesome skyscape to die for.......
The symmetrical compo indeed works best here, bounded by immaculate detail, pleasing clarity and colours scheme, there's so much to admire and its history to illustrate this piece. A shot beyond reproach, Congrats.
Best regards

Hello Luciano,
Your picture of Pietrabbondante is the first one of this place on TE.
Not that much of the theater still remains but this is a pretty sight with the vista to the mountains.
An impressive dramatic sky on top but the clarity is first class.
Well composed, very good sharpness.
Best regards, Paul

Ciao caro Luciano,
You have written a wonderfully fascinating and informative note about Pietrabbondante and this remarkable theatre-temple complex and shown us a beautiful photograph.
Your viewpoint is perfect for this beautifully symmetrical composition. I love how the theatre and its surroundings are quite brightly lit while the distant view is somewhat darker and the sky above, with its wonderful cloud formations, seems to come down upon us and concentrate our attention on the curvature of the theatre itself.
Beautiful light, natural colours, perfect exposure and exquisite details and clarity.
Beautiful!
Kind Regards,
John.

A small scale amphiteatre, but wonderfully preserved, its perfect crescent shape and the remnants that looks to be intact after so many years.
Your POV is most effective, with the landscape beyond appearing in fine contrast and clarity.

Hello Luciano,
This is a very small theatre, but there must have been quite an intimate atmosphere when plays were performed here in ancient days. It's very nicely preserved and looks quite elegant from this angle. The great advantage with this photo is that you could also include so much of the beautiful surroundings. Even the dark clouds look very good.
Best wishes,

Bonsoir Luciano,
This reminds me of Stobi in Macedonia. It was 30 minutes to closing time and I virtually had the whole historical park to myself. The theatre in Kas Turkey is also similar but offers a seascape rather than a landscape. Tfs!

good to have the clouds and landscape in the bg for depth too.

Ciao caro Luciano,
You know how much I love ancient ruins!
There is such a wonder that people could build places, like this, without the specialised tools that we have today, and construct them so well, that they survive for millenniums!
Your photograph fulfills the details of the amphitheatre, the details of its location and details of the weather.
What more could we ask for!
Have a lovely w/e,
Bev :-)
