Church of Our Lady of Health in Zadar

It was built in the 18th century in baroque style at the site of an older church, as well as the mausoleum of Archbishop Zmajevića. It keeps the image of Our Lady of the Fortress painted by Blaz Jurjev Trogiranin in the 15th century. (Now in the permanent exhibition of church art). It enjoys a great reputation and popularity in many generations of Zadar's inhabitants. In World War II it was completely destroyed, and only have a bell tower and a little shrine. It was restored only in 1990 valuable donation of the late Msgr. Simeon Duce, who is in it and buried.

Zdravo Piotr. Top shots from Zadar. For this one and previous ones you mention the destruction during WW2 Many civilians were killed and maimed from the bombing by the Allies (the British.) No one was ever brought to justice for the almost total destruction of this ancient town and no reparation was ever made by those who destroyed so that the town could be rebuilt. My dad's friend who was there as a young man during one of the bombings was hit in the chest by a flying rock and he told me that body parts of civilians were hanging from the trees. Now it's all forgotten, no on ever said sorry. Wonderful light in all your Zadar shots and excellent composition and details. Pozdrav. Klaudio.

Hello Piotr,

I suppose, for Simeon Duce, it was a bit like building his own mausoleum, if he is buried inside. Rich people have often, through the ages, ensured a magnificent 'resting place'.
Your viewpoint has ensured that we see how the building rises magnificently, culminating in the dome, with its cross pinnacle.
I like how you have been able to include a figure, looking upwards, which has helped to direct our attention.
Despite the strong lighting contrasts, you have exposed the scene well.

That's restored to its former glory and aptly treated that has lot to offer with your lovely symmetrical composition that seems to focus straight on the tower taking the eye around and to the rest of features. I love the varied light, shadows and glorious colours as they make the formal discipline of the architecture more involving. You captured this so well, Congrats.

sliczny maly kosciol, uroczy styl. Bardzo ladnie oswietlony pomimo ze uliczka waska i juz jedna strona w glebokim cieniu. Swietny reportaz. Zaczynam sie tylko zastanawiac czy bede mial tak duzo czasu jak Ty zeby zobaczyc tyle roznych zakatkow.

Missed this one. Good sharpness and the stand alone building has been well framed and composed. I like the stone statues atop the roof. The people add scale. Tfs!
