Photographer's Note

Taken on a Chinook helicopter flight from northern to southern Aghanistan. I was happy to see that there was much more to Afghanistan than treeless mountains and scorching heat. In this fertile valley the farmers have divided their areas by fences made of mud and wood. Much of the housing in rural areas is of the same fashion. In the background there is a storm blowing in and raising dust on a grand scale.

Im not usually one to post military photographs but I think this is a pretty interesting scene. Hope you can enjoy it despite politics.

Hi Sean, this is a fascinating picture showing the military presence against the background of the beautiful scenery. The soldier with his gun gives the context and it is as if we are looking at the scene through his eyes. The body of the helicopter provides great framing.

I could be wrong, but this looks to be south of Kabul (the other side of the ridge) and on the way to Ghazni. I think the main road is just out of the frame to the right. While travelling along this road I saw several helicopters flying this route.

Sad that Afghanistan has to be seen in this manner, but this shot depicts the situation well. Interesting contrast between the dust storm and the green farms. Nice framing using the doorway. Regards, Ken.

I'm surprised to see that Afghanistan is not only a desert...
Hope that one day the guy might hold something else than a gun...

Hello Remig,

nice shot. It's show a different view of Afghanistan than the treelees mountains. The dust over the farms and the storm in the background make the picture more interesting than by clear weather.
