Photographer's Note
The National Assembly building was designed by the American Architect Louis Kahn. It was originally commissioned in 1963 by the Pakistanis when Bangladesh was East Pakistan. The ensuing liberation war delayed completion and the building was eventually finished in 1982. It is a modern contruction with a geometrical design based on cylinders, rectangles and triangles.
This picture was taken from the rear of the building looking across one of the attractive water features. It is the late afternoon with the sun low in the sky.

Hi Jonathan
You have really made the building look more attractive than it is - this is a testament to your skill here. I visited this building and thought it was very ugly indeed. The use of the warm sunlight has enhanced the composition and the nice use of the reflections. You have done an excellent job here.
Cheers

Bel韘sima imagem, a composi玢o as cores e o DOF est鉶 髏imos. Os reflexos na 醙ua deram um toque especial a foto.

Hello Jonathan,
Nice capture and POV for this picture. Like the coulours and reflections on water. It's a pitty that the sky is a bit washed up and the image is a bit dark on the right side.
Rgds.

Jonathan, ce calme d'un soir avec la lumi鑢e dor閑 plus les reflets des frondaisons et des b鈚iments est tr鑣 bien rendu dans une composition sans reproche. Excellent !

Beautiful shot of this interesting building. I can't ever recall seeing a picture of this before, so good work in showing us this. It looks like the grounds are beautiful too, with lots of reflecting pools, and taking the shot in the evening light shows it to best advantage. Well done!

Regarding the National Assembly Building:
"In the assembly I have introduced a light-giving element to the interior of the plan. If you see a series of columns you can say that the choice of columns is a choice in light. The columns as solids frame the spaces of light. Now think of it just in reverse and think that the columns are hollow and much bigger and that their walls can themselves give light, then the voids are rooms, and the column is the maker of light and can take on complex shapes and be the supporter of spaces and give light to spaces. I am working to develop the element to such an extent that it becomes a poetic entity which has its own beauty outside of its place in the composition. In this way it becomes analogous to the solid column I mentioned above as a giver of light. It was not belief, not design, not pattern, but the essence from which an institution could emerge..."
(Louis I. Kahn, Louis I. Kahn: Complete Works 1935-74. p236, 238.)
I think it is needless to say more about The National Assembly Building of Bangladesh (Jatiyo Sangsad Bhaban) - considered to be Louis I Kahn's masterpiece and one of the great monuments of Modernism in architecture. Its architectural excellence is unsurpassable - the whole mass is a harmonic play of solid and void, shadow and light.
It never occured to me that someone could find it ugly! But offcourese there are people who might find the Yale University Art Gallery, New Haven, Connecticut or the Kimbell Art Museum, Fort Worth, Texas or the Richards Medical Research Laboratories, University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania as very ugly.
Regarding this photograph:
Actually, I was hoping for something more from you Jonathan, specially after seeing those beautiful previous posts. Every morning and evening on my way to office and back home I see this building in so many different lights that I find this one rather flat and uninteresting. I wholly agree with gebala.

This clean and well maintained complex is not something I would expect to see from Bangladesh, so thanks for showing "the other side" of the chaotic city, great timing with the low light.

I wouldn't have expected Bangladesh to have that kind of achitecture (whish is finally a stupid thought !?) and I thank you for showing us that. And it's very well realized, with a wondeful light and a great graphism.
