Photographer's Note

My last photo showed four boys trying to ride a bike together. Here you can see lots of boys and girls each riding their own bike. It is from Battambang, a major city in northwestern Cambodia, a few years ago.

Many of you didn't like the Soviet style environment of my last photo. I hope you will find the French colonial style of central Battambang more pleasant. But beware, there is litter in this street too.

Battambang used to be the second largest city of Cambodia. In recent years tourism has changed the demographic pattern of the country and Siem Reap (Angkor temples) and Sihanoukville (beaches) have overtaken Battambang, which only receives a small trickle of visitors. Maybe that is why I enjoyed quiet and peaceful Battambang very much.

This photo is of course nothing special. I just enjoyed the warm late afternoon light on this side of the street and waited for some people to come near me. Lots of children were on their way home from school, so I didn't have to wait long.

Here is a larger version.

I will also post two other photos from Battambang as workshops. They have no connection to this, but they do include bikes (motorized, hard to avoid in any urban photo from Southeast Asia). One shows monks crossing a bridge, the other a crowded square.

Earlier I have also posted this photo from one of the main streets of Battambang.
