‘Contemporary Battambang and French Colonial Buildings’
Battambang, the third largest city in Cambodia by population, is described in travel guides as a place with French colonial architecture.
Not that the city is overflowing with colonial buildings, but in the street along the Sangker River I was able to take these pictures.
Now that I see these photos after more than a year after my return and after so many memories, Battambang looks very modern here.
In reality I didn't think it was a very modern town.
But it was a pleasant place and there were not nearly as many foreign visitors as in Siem Reap, Phnom Penh or Kampot.
Motorcycles and tuk tuks dominated the streets.

Hello Paul,
I just sent a request for some Battambang photos... ;-)
I don't specifically remember these buildings, and considering that some parts of the world change rapidly, maybe they didn't exist in 2007. They certainly look new, and so does the street and pavement, so I may be right. The WS fits my memory better. It seems that some money has seeped into the local economy of Battambang too, despite the relative lack of tourism. Drugs? Smuggling from Thailand?
Very interesting in any case, and very good light and colours, plus a perfect inclusion of the red tuk tuk.
Regards,
Gert

Hallo Paul,

Hi again Paul
Indeed, in this photo it doesn't even look like what we would normally imagine as a SE Asian city. To start with, where are all the crowds? Almost as if the street had been closed so a foreign photographer can take this photo. :-)
Sometimes the choice of a particular part of a city doesn't show what the city is like. But these buildings are lovely and very much worth photographing. The vehicle is a nice addition and couldn't be in better colour! An equivalent of a lady in red. :-)
It must have been nice to find a place in that popular country with fewer tourists.
Best wishes
Kasia

Bonsoir Paul,
La motocyclette et sa remorque attire le regard. La prise de vue permet de voir les détails des maisons. La qualité de la lumière embellit les couleurs de l'image. Bonne soirée.

Good morning Paul,
Neat and elegant two buildings with mustard-yellow and white decorative architecture details.
The passing red tuk-tuk added nice color and a sense of motion which was superbly collected.
Have a nice new day,
Ike

Hello Paul,
The red tuk tuk at right is the icing on the cake in this shot and the neo colonial French style buildings wouldn't look out of place in France. The yellow facades contrast well with the blue sky. Tfs!

Goedemiddag Paul,
Prachtig gedaan, bedankt.
Groeten uit Oost-Vlaanderen,
John

Hi Paul,
That motorcycle rickshaw is something I haven't seen before. I'm glad to see the shade helps the driver too. Somehow those houses remind me of Lego buildings. Maybe it's that shade of yellow and the stripes between blocks.

Hello Paul, the yellow buildings look even brighter in the large version.
They are more than worthy of a shot or two.
The red vehicle is a good component.
As you say about the buildings in the workshop picture, such a shame to spoil the buildings with those awful shop names etc.,
Wouldn't it be lovely to see the buildings complete?
Kind regards, Jean.

Hello Paul.
At the sight of these beautiful houses, one would think of a western city, although the motorcycle transport, breaks that idea a bit, but that yellow color alternating with white is very attractive.
Both the color and the brightness of the photo are magnificent, highlighting the beauty and sharpness of the composition.
Very well done. I like
Have a good day.
Very best regards.
Luis.

Hello Paul,
These colonial buildings do seem incongruous with those that we have seen previously, though they make very imposing residences and you have photographed them with excellent clarity.
The guy with his tuk tuk is a very good link feature, whilst the glimpse of the buildings in the b/g do not look as smart as these ones!
I agree with your note, those shop frontages do little to make the buildings look as attractive as they possibly could be!
My warm regards,
Bev :-)
Thank you for choosing my photograph of Herculaneum as a favourite. I am honoured!

Hi Paul
these hardly even look real, almost TOO pristine and TOO good.
who lives here? maybe the building on the left isn't a home but some sort of lawyers office or something. Certainly not the Cambodia I have in my mind when I think about what i'd be photographing. Interesting indeed. lucky to have the red Tuk Tuk for contrast. cheers

Hi Paul,
I just love these colorful facades. The colors are so well saturated, the seem to jump to the eyes of a viewer.
Yellow goes so well with the blue sky and the red tuk tuk adds another color and some action there,
Very well done,

Hello Paul,
After seeing all the houses on stilts, these buildings definitely look luxurious. I like the color scheme, too. The passing vehicle adds life to the scene, and I like the patterns on the sidewalk, too. Take care!
