Photographer's Note
Escape from the towns and move to the Cambodia countryside, you will see that there are more than 75% housing here is on stilts. This is a thousand-year residence of the Cambodian people and is still maintained today, that is the reason for the formation of habits living in the stilts. The first reason is that Cambodia is located in the lower Mekong, thus it can be influenced by flood, worse still, at the end of the dry season, flood peak can rise up to 15m. Hence Cambodia traditional houses are useful to avoid the flood. Secondly, from ancient time until now, Cambodia has myriad of poisonous snakes and wild animals around their houses, the stilts are also efficient to avoid these dangers. The last factor we cannot miss is the effect in business and weather in Cambodia. The space under the floor can use as a kitchen or storehouse, even a space to relax in the midday.

Hi Gerrit,an almost obligatory choice for these populations, both because of the floods and because of the dangerous animals, and during the dry season, the ground floor can also be used as an outdoor dwelling. Excellent capture from the Cambodian countryside and very useful and interesting post. Have a nice day and thanks,Luciano

Hello Gerrit,
An interesting view accompanied by an interesting note. This may be an advantage of seeing a country from a bicycle, that you can reach small villages which most foreign visitors can only catch a quick glimpse of from a bus or a train.
Regards,
Gert

Goedemiddag Gerrit,
Goed foto werk, bedankt.
Groeten uit Vlaanderen,
John.

Hello Gerrit, Interesting note. I remember such houses in Laos and Cambodia. I saw how they used the area under the house as a place for relaxation of daily activities, but I didn't know about the snakes. And I remember this red soil.
Best regards

Hi Gerrit,
Except for some parts of Siem Reap, much of northern Cambodia was impoverished and noticeably poorer than neighboring Thailand, although I found the food was similar. Good sharpness and framing. Tfs!

Hello Gerrit,
I understood the reason for stilts to escape floods but it hadn't occurred to me that it was avoid snakes and other dangerous creatures, too! What a great idea!
You clearly show us how the houses work, with strong supporting legs and ladder-like steps. You also give us an impression of the setting, the types of trees and the use of a guarding fence.
My warm regards,
Bev :-)
