Photographer's Note

This was taken in a tiny market town of Qiaotou about 100km north west of Lijiang, a mountainous region popularly known as 'The Land of Three Parallel Rivers' where The Yang Tze, Mekong and Salween Rivers flow approximately parallel, north to south through steep gorges which in places are 3,000 m deep and are bordered by glaciated peaks more than 6,000 m high. An incredibly friendly little town full of shooting opportunities.

These are Yi people, one of the many ethnic minorities in Yunnan - and obviously I was very much attracted to the vibrant colours of their traditional costumes topped by the distinctive huge kite-shape headdresses. They not only add to the appeal of this quaint town but also one of Yunnan's symbols of charm.

I was more than happy even without their faces, a more elemental appearance from this pov with camera set to widest aperture and fast shutter speed so as to give the totality of the subject.
