Photographer's Note
Dog lovers (not in the culinary sense) might find this photo to be in bad taste, and a little hard to swallow, but it is nevertheless reflective of major cultural differences between societies. Dog is eaten is some regions of China, though not everywhere, and Yunnan has its fair share of dog dishes. This unfortunate canine ended up roasted on a spit, with what appears to be a kind of blow torch, visible on the right. Whatever our moral standpoint on such issues, this happens.
The picture was taken in Xinjie, the old county seat of Yuan Yang, which is without doubt one of the ugliest and most rickety towns I have ever been to. Even by Chinese standards it's an awful and dirty mess; in stark contrast to the beauty of the area's terraced fields.

Hi Andre,
It is my turn to thank you for this unpleasant, but geniune picture of cultural difference. I haven't seen roasted dogs like yours but dried ones, what is not much better.
Nice shot anyway, Thanks for sharing. Tibo

Hi Andre, I am not animal lover however this picture makes me a little uneasy about what meat I am being served in certain restaurants. The note is very informative and the picture is very interesting.

i am sorry to see this picture! in fact, in my city, the dog is like kid! in my home i have 3dogs and they are VIP and eat firstly, playing, fighting, enjoy their life! even the children are much less important i think so! only undeveloped places such as North West China there are some village have this kind of ugly picture can be taken! if someone kicks my dog, i will kill him/her by my furious eyes! still there are many many foreigners think Chinese people like from stone age, they eat human being's sincere friend: dogs. i want to say, if you are in surviving condition, do not say to eat dogs, you may eat human beings too!the saddest is some rich countries are attacking some others because of some profits only killing a lot of innocent people! they are not for survive but for gas or.... who knows they knew themselves better! i am not a staff working in Chinese government and also not going to fight with anyone, but i dislike very much some people to twist my nation! maybe the taker of the picture has no this kind of purpose, but from his pictures about showing China like a such ugly country making me feel uneasy! please have a look to see the real picture i just took for my city: http://www.trekearth.com/gallery/Asia/China/photo220826.htm

Hi Andre
strong shot!
I am amazed that you didn't get more critiques for this one. I myself tried to upload a shot of a dogs head lying in a butchers stall in the market of guangzou, but within moments i recieved a lot of furious comments demanding that i deleted the picture, which i (in a moment of weakness) did.
good note as well.

Hi Andre,
Of course the picture is difficult to accept.
I understand these picture is rather difficult to accept – and even to look at -. But this is all about reality of our world. Therefore, not in contradiction in my view with TE’s philosophy, i.e. “learning the world through photography”. And only by seeing, can we understand, and possibly act.
Cheers.
Michel

The image is a little bothering for one who is not used to see it.. We eat pig they eat dog.. If we try to seek for a decent justification as that it is more cruel to kill a dog than a pig in order to eat it we will see that there is none.. A pig raised as a pet is equal to a dog. The pigs are also intelligent animals that can develope afection for the ones who raise them.. I think that it is just a thing of cultural diferences.. I, myself, love dogs, I have 4 at home and I would never roast them, but I can accept the cultural differences. :) Thanks for sharing!
