Photographer's Note

The Sun temple, at Konark, is probably the best example of the Orissan architectural excellence. The temple is a 'World heritage site',which takes the form of the chariot of Surya, the sun god, and is heavily decorated with stone carving. The entire complex was designed in the form of a huge chariot drawn by seven spirited horses on twelve pairs of exquisitely decorated wheels.

The wheels of the chariot are engraved with sculptures around their axis and peripheries. There are 24 wheels fixed to the temple which are of 9 feet 9 inches in diameter having 8 spokes. Out of the 24 wheels, 6 are on the either side of the main temple, 4 on each side of the Mukhasala(main entrance) with the remaining 2 on each side of steps at the eastern front. The 24 wheels signifiy 24 hours of a day and the 8 spokes signify prahars ( three hour period ) of a day.

The Konark wheel were depicted on currency notes( Rs 10 and Rs 20 nots) in 1980s.
