Photographer's Note

Back to another post from Darjeeling area. This was on a different trip though, one in which we trekked to Tonglu from Dhotrey. The trekking route is almost entirely uninhabited. I found this little boy in a shepherd hut alone. His family had probably ventured out to earn their daily bread leaving this little beauty to fend for himself. Shot on the doorway, with the dark interiors of the hut as the BG.
Incidentally this area falls under the Singalila National Park. This is the setting for one of the most scenically rewarding treks in the entire Himalaya, with views of four of the world’s five highest mountains - Kangchenjunga, Makalu, Everest and Lhotse.
The Park at the extreme northwest of West Bengal forms the border with Nepal and is a high altitude protected forest. The popular Sandakphu trek is through this Park. Thick bamboo, oak and rhododendron forest between 2000 and 3600 m cover the Singalila Ridge which runs roughly north to south. The popular birding trek is from Manebhanjan (2100 m) to Sandakphu (3640 m) and back with halts at Gairibas (2620 m) or Kalipokhri (3110 m). The fauna that can be observed in this park include the barking deer, red panda, chinkara, takin, serow, pangolin, minivet and Kalij pheasants.
