Photographer's Note
Gangaikondacholapuram is a modest village of Tamil Nadu, exalted name "city of the Cholas who took the Ganges," was the capital of the powerful Chola dynasty during the reign of King Rajendra (1012-1044), military commander as his magnificent father Rajaraja I, who was the first Tamil leader who ventured to travel north. Built his city to commemorate the success of his campaign for the Ganges.
Except for the majestic, Brihadishvara Temple, there is little that remains of that capital. Built as a replica of Brihadishvara Temple, Thanjavur, though the sanctuary is smaller than that of Thanjavur. The lower walls, columns and niches are adorned with striking relief. These are magnificent examples of Chola art, as you can see by the relief that I show here. One of the most notable is the panel that plays Shiva, bless Chandesha, a devout carved with the features of Rajendra I. In the courtyard there are steps to reach a well, which is believed to be filled with water from the Ganges to the rituals of every day.

Hola, very difficult name of this place but I can tell it because I was also there. Excellent shot of this architectonic detail. Fantastic sculptures. Nice colours and sharpness. I remember the nice grass there, not hot stones like in other temples.

Only one name to the place? or this would be only the short version to it's nick-name... my humor Luis.
Nice picture and explanation about the history of the village, unique yet typical figures carved as statue.
Buen fin de semana,

Hi Luis
Thanks Luis, a much infor note to help us appreciate this shot, a tongue twisting name of the location it seems- LOL- probably the longest name I have ever come across. Enormous skill and talents of the artists and craftsmen are so obvious here, and so much to absorb. The fine detail of the sculptures is quite mesmerising. Nice crop, good exposure, coloring and contrast. You have certainly captured the spirit of India pretty well. Excellent shot, TFS.
Kind regards

very impressive sculpture. The name made me laugh. It does not seem easy to memorize. Great processing to emphasize the texture of the sculpture.

Hola Luis,
Pili y Josep
