Picking coconuts, a photo from Goa, West

Photographer's Note

My neighbor's coconut trees needed to be cleaned and nuts had to be picked, so they called this man who is an expert at this job!
You can see in his hand the Goan machete, called 'Koita', which is extremely sharp... then we see also the Goan technique for climbing palm trees, with the help of a rope(made of coco fiber) across his feet... They can climb the highest trees...

I know there are some overexposed areas, but I liked to post this picture...!

Mais je le connais! J'aime bien le cadrage ici avec les palmes partant en etoile depuis le coeur du cocotier... on voit bien que ce n'est pas le premier qu'il grimpe!

C抏st quand je lis tes notes comme celle que tu proposes aujourd抙ui que je me rends compte � quel point vous vivez dans un endroit VRAIMENT exotique... Super int閞essant ton truc, � la fois en image et en texte. J抜magine que le grimpeur-expert ne fait pas ce travail que depuis hier, car il a visiblement les pieds pour l抏mploi...

Malgr� le caract鑢e 玠ocumentaire� de ta photo, il y a une composition visiblement soign閑. Tu parles de zones surexpos閑s, mais je ne vois pas comment tu aurais pu 関iter 鏰, puisque de tels 閏arts de lumi鑢e sont impossible � g閞er. Tu as privil間i� d抩uvrir pour les zones sombres et je crois que c抏st ce que tu devais faire; en tous cas, le r閟ultat est probant.

Je vois que Laurent donne de plus en plus d抜ndices pour nous mettre la puce � l抩reille... Moi, je demeure discret et je n抋i toujours pas r閜andu la nouvelle... :-D)

what an ingenious way to do the job with ease- the circular rope, i meant. the samoans do it the same way. in my philippines it is done either using a long bamboo pole or climbing with previously cut groves on the trunk from bottom up! climbing coconuts require expertise. nice POV and yeah some portions are overexposed, a minor flaw for me.

This is a job that I would not want to endeavour... The rope on the feet is a technique that I have never heard of until today. A good image of a tree that needs pruned indeed!

Hi Marilyn. It has a been a long time since I last saw people cutting coconuts off the tree. Very nice catch of this scene. It is a risky job but these people are well prepared for that. Interesting picture with good clarity and colours. Thanks.

Un bon cadrage d閏entr� qui permet de bien voir les palmes, tout en donnant assez de d閠ails sur le cueilleur. La machette n'est pas tr閟 visible, en revanche la boucle de corde qui lui permet de bloquer les pieds en grimpant l'ai beaucoup plus et c'est 鏰 qui est int閞essant. Bonne nettet� et les effets ombres / luni鑢es li閟 au feuillage sont tr閟 r閡issis.

Pour ma part, le crit鑢e de beaut� n'est pas la seule pr閛ccupation ; mon int閞阾 se porte sur le sujet, le choix de la r閍lisation, l'int閞阾, etc.

Hi Marilyn. Good capture of this pretty challenging looking job. He looks very agile and good at doing that trimming and picking work. I see them doing a similar thing with a very long pole and curved knife at the end. I like coconut trees and this is very good to see. Murray.

Ol� Marilyn, the overexpositions areas don't bother me at all and I like the graphic result of all these leaves, shadows and light. Good composition with a perfect placement of the man holding on the trunk of the palmtree. Excellent daily life capture.

une sc鑞e tr鑣 originale celle qui nous montre ta photo.
C'est incroyable comment l'homme s'accroche dans le palmier sans tomber, seulement avec une corde dans ses pieds comme appui pour grimper. Et d閖� il tire sa machette pour couper les cocotiers.
C'est une photo tr鑣 int閞essante sur ce travail dangereux et sur la vie quotidienne dans ce pays.

Difficult shot because of the exposure, but well handled. I always wanted to take a shot of these fellas briskly climbing coconut trees, truly a skill...but don't see much coconut trees in Delhi. Maybe I'll try when I go to Kolkata!

Je ne sais pas � combien de m鑤res culminent ces cocotiers mais il faut avoir le pas bien assur� !!! Image int閞essante sur la cueillette. Je ne trouve pas d閞angeant la surexposition estomp閑 par le feuillage fourni. Bien vu Marilyn.
