Photographer's Note

This picture is of two yurts, the seasonal dwellings used by herders in the hills of Kyrgyzstan and other Central Asian countries.

The photograph was taken at Lake Song-Kul where there are summer pastures. Local people bring their horses and cattle here during the warm weather and return to the towns in the winter.

On the day I arrived the sky was in two halves. One was dark and threatening, the other clear and bright. This gave the wonderful effect of golden illumination on the yurts with a backdrop of tempestuous storm clouds.
