Photographer's Note
During 20th century the art crossed many turbulences and styles around the world, but in Russia it was ever more turbulent.
After the end of communism around 1989, the Russian artists received again the right to express their art freely. I presume some of them could be more attached to the help of government and liked more the official money than the freedom.
This is a canvas is named "The Mourning" and was created by Gelly Korzhev (1997-99).
It was a kind of artwork not permitted during communism with religious theme. Anyway this artwork isn't a traditional religious art. Pay attention in dead Jesus, He is grey and even older than His mother. Mary is watching Her Son in a curious way, as if His death was funny. There were other canvas of this same artist. I would like to post more, they are so interesting and well done. This art show us as the religious aspect of Russian society came back soon after the communism, but the atheist feeling, learned during decades, is present in some way. In this canvas you can see this isn't a real religious art, there is a kind of irony..
..............

Ciao Jorge
A strange religious artwork indeed. Lenin once said religion is the opiate of the masses. But these days Lenin is reviled even within Russia. A good capture of this enigmatic painting. Tfs!

Hi Jorge,
I think it is a mockery of the christian religion. When you look at the face of Mary, it is looking like a man's face. The colors and the sharpness is very good. Have a nice day.

Hello Jorge,
It is a strange painting.
Until read your notes, I was quite unsure of the person studying the dead Jesus and actually, thought it was a male figure.
I cannot identify the expression on Mary's face. It is not sad or tearful, more self satisfied.
You have taken an excellent photograph of the painting to show the details but I'm afraid that it is a painting that I would not have in my house.
My warm regards,
Bev :-)

Hello Jorge, This is indeed a strange painting. The theme is like a Pieta but not the view we are used to. We can recognize that we see Christ only by the thorn wreath. But maybe this is just and old read beard man?
Have a nice weekend

Hi Jorge,
may be they were suppressing their feelings for such a long time that they don't know how to express them anymore. They need to learn how to do it from scratch.
Interesting to read your note though, you really take time to prepare for a visit to a gallery.
Great reportage,
M
