Tajiks, young and mature, a photo from Sughd, West

Photographer's Note

After descending from Obburdon Pass, we had night stop at a small roadside inn kept by a Tajik family. In the morning, three members of the family, two boys and their granddad had their duty to be over and went home. I photographed them at the Obburdon Village.

Tajik is a general designation for a wide range of Persian-speaking people of Iranian origin, with traditional homelands in present-day Tajikistan, Afghanistan and Uzbekistan.

The Tajiks are the principal ethnic group in most of Tajikistan, as well as in northern and western Afghanistan, though there are more Tajiks in Afghanistan than in Tajikistan. Tajiks are a substantial minority in Uzbekistan, as well as in overseas communities. Historically, the ancestors of the Tajiks lived in a larger territory in Central Asia than now.

Tajiks comprise around 79.9% of the population of Tajikistan. This number includes speakers of the Pamiri languages and the Yaghnobi people who in the past were considered by the government of the Soviet Union nationalities separate from the Tajiks. In the 1926 and 1937 Soviet censuses, the Yaghnobis and Pamiri language speakers were counted as separate nationalities. After 1937, these groups were required to register as Tajiks.

Hello Sergiy,
It's no surprise that this reminds me of Afghanistan, although the style of the clothes is more Western than what I saw in the neighboring country in the early 70's. The magnificent scenery of eroded mountains and green valley is very much the same. It's a nice photo where the three persons are standing on a wall with an incredible background.

Ha! Ha! The boys look like two gunfighters from the old cowboy films, with their arms posed ready for a quick draw!
It's a nice family group and what spectacular scenery we can see behind them!
In fact, the clothes of these people match quite well with the surrounding countryside.

Никогда не был в таких местах. Смотрю на горы- безжизненный камень, а ведь чуть ниже все растет. Днем жарко, ночью холодно небось? Интересный репортаж. Там тоже с охраной ездили!

Magnificent portrait of this man and his children, two generations strong, to face the hard life in those very arid mountains, while the valley below is certainly very green and rich in fruits and vegetables.
