Photographer's Note
Phutthamonthon is a huge park in Thailand (in Nakhon Prathom province just outside Bangkok). It's known for the very large Buddha statue. But there's also a lot of trails that go through the forest. My friend and I were walking around there as the sun was setting. The result is this photo. I thought the light from the sun balanced out the light on the ground with my friend's bright blue traditional shirt popping out - maybe a bit too much? But let me know what you think.

Hi David,
Very little balancing going on here. The light of your built-in flash is just too hard and direct. I think you need a heavier external flash (bit of a contradiction), not pointed at your subject, but upward with a diffuser and holding a white screen or slightly yellow above your head for reflection...
There are no easy solutions to make a picture like this one. Well, another option was that you could have hidden three slave flashes behind your subject... One on the tree perhaps with a colour filter, two from the side with diffusers... But then again, who carries around 3 slave flashes when taking pictures outside? ;-)
Hope it helps!
Greetings, Dennis
