He's neither a former Viet Cong guerrilla nor a commie North Vietnam soldier.

Just a humble motorbike taxi driver waiting for passenger outside the wall of Hanoi old quarter. The lightweight pith helmet is a well known item worn by the VC during Indo-China wars 1945 -1975, but it's still widely worn by civilians mostly in the northern provinces namely in Hanoi.

Its use has seen sharp decline of late when the motorbike helmet became mandatory for riders.

A beautiful black and white photo with a nostalgic atmosphere.
At first sight you can easily draw wrong conclusions from the image, but if you look more closely you clearly recognize the scene you are describing.

B&W for once, but the pose and the details are stunning as the framing. Even if he wears an old helmet he has also some jeans issued from the Western countries at the end of the WWII.
