Photographer's Note
This one was shot just a few meters to the right of Casas Reales, the palace I showed in my last panorama.
On the left is the Alcázar de Colón, the palace of the Columbus family for much of the 16th century. It was built by Diego, the Portuguese son of Christopher, on the early 16th century. To the right lies one of the main gates of the wall that surrounded the whole primitive city, which is nicely shown in this post of Peter Boehringer.
I am too lazy to write anything about the history of the place, specially after noticing again how the note of Peter's post is so well written and informative.
About the place itself, I just hope that the postcard speaks for itself.
Location (latitude, longitude): 18.4774,-69.8826
Update 19-Sep-2007: After reading the critiques of ribeiroantonio, feather, vincz and pboehringer, I decided to post a WS with another crop and a slight increase of contrast. Maybe you can tell me which version you prefer, because I am divided: although I tend to agree that much of the area of the main post is redundant, at the same time, I kind of like all that pale yellow floor "sweeping" our sight to the gate and the palace. As for the palm tree on the left, it is clear to me now that it does nothing on the main post.
Update 5-Jun-2008: I posted a WS with another POV of this square.

I enjoyed combining this with reminding myself about Peter's inputs. Both this and the Casa Reales are very austere buildings, which I guess was the fashion of the time. It's intriguing to see it is just a part of the environment and not behind a huge wall. I'm not sure that the composition works as there seems to be a lot of bland elements in the frame, but then I wasn't there so don't know what the limitations were. About a third of the image on the right seems superfluous, but cropping would give you a square format, which you probably wouldn't want. The only alternative I can think of would be to move more to your right when taking the shot and just include the archways on the right of the frame and have more of a view up the steps to the palace. Sorry to be negative, but I do find the post interesting.

Olá José,
lovely place, full of details and a good POV. The sky is impressing (two days after). It is a strange impression. Why? I would expect a lot of people there, just a crowd or two. So empty, so much space. Is there beside the storm this place ever so empty?

F

Jose,
your are sooooo lazy! Anyway thanks for the free referral to my DR shots. It made me interested to look back and have the memories of that delicious time that I had there including to get to know our common friend Emile.
Obviously I recognized te place rigth away and it is interesting to see that a person living in California and another in Portugal and they never met physically can have a firndship and similar experiences at a distant place they have been at different times. Internet and TE are a fascinating blend.
Regarding the technical aspects of the shot I agree with Kath. I miss a certain punch although I like the shot itself.
Regards, Peter

The grey sky makes the palce a little special : martial, straight, austere...
The way you composed that is OK and I enjoy the depth you get. Well done.

Hi Jose
Nice overview of the plaza, with superb sharpbness, colour, lighting & contrast. I like the slight downward incline. Good repetition of the palms. Tfs!

Hola Jose.
