態eersel - Beersel Castle

Closer to home this time.
My photos were taken on one of the very few days of good weather we had in September this year.

Beersel Castle (慘asteel van Beersel) is a medieval castle located in Beersel, Belgium, 15 km from Brussels and 6 km from the city of Halle.

This moated castle, is one of the few well-preserved examples of medieval military architecture in Belgium. Fairly well preserved, but a ruin!
The castle was built in the 14th century and functioned as a forward fortress to defend Brussels.
The fortifications of the castle are classic: deep moats, drawbridge, battlements with parapets and embrasures.
Parts were added later on.
From the 16th century, the castle has only been a residential castle.
At the end of the 18th century, the last inhabitant died and it gradually fell into ruin.

All my contemporaries in Belgium know this castle well because it occurred in a 1954 comic book 慏e schat van Beersel (慣he treasure of Beersel) by Willy Vandersteen which forms part of the 慡uske en Wiske series (in English: 慡pike and Suzy). A lot of children learned to read at that time with the comics from this series.
