THE YSER :

A SMALL STREAM WITH A GREAT HISTORY:

The Yser is the only river on Belgian soil to flow into the North Sea.
The stream which is 78 kilometres long, takes its rise on a height
of 35 metres nearby Haene Berg in Lederzeele in the north of France
(department Nord). It winds along the edge of the flat West-Flemish
polder-land towards its mouth in Nieuwpoort. The Yser drains a
hilly area of approximately 1.116 km, of which about one third is
situated in France.
Its upper course has taken quite a long time to develop and mainly
preserved its natural character. The formation of the lower course
dates from more recent times and has been greatly modeled by
human influence. Embankments, canalization and consolidation
of the banks determine the actual course of the Yser. The fall of
the river is moderate. Nevertheless, the capacity of the river-bed is
restricted. During heavy or lasting rainfall the marshy land on the
right bank gets flooded. Besides its role as frontline during World
War I, the Yser is notorious for its wintry floods. The production of
drinking-water, nature-preservation and aquatic recreation are new
functions for this small but fascinating river.
