Sunday a new bike trip to Damme but with 20° Celsius
SCHELLEMOLEN DAMME
You cannot, miss the Damme windmill. He stands high above his immediate surroundings next to the “Damse Vaart” on one of the most picturesque spots of Damme. This makes it one of the most photographed mills in the world.
A wooden standard mill, called the “Scellemeulen”, stood on this spot since the town began. This mill was owned by the Counts of Flanders; in 1267 those rights were sold to the city by Countess Margaret of Constantinople. Half of the proceeds, however, still had to be given to the graves.
The current mill was built in 1867 on the site where the wooden mill stood for centuries and remained in use until 1963. In 1971 it was bought by the province of West Flanders and restored in 1975-1977. It has been a protected monument since 1975 and since the restoration, the blades are turning into the wind again in the summer. Also pay attention to the mermaid that is on top of the hood; a reference to the "legend of the mermaid".
I hope you can enjoy.

Hi John,
Quite typical view for Belgium, Although Dutch are more famous of wind mills. This one looks great, and you have a good viewpoint to it over the canal. So nice to see those horses too.

Hello John,
The windmill is the strong eye.catcher, but I can't help noticing that old and modern means of travelling are meeting in the road: a traditional horse-carriage and bicyclists. They, all, and the horses grazing to the left, give the view nice glimpses of life and movement. Only 20 °C? Our thermometers are stuck at around 29-30. ;-)
Kind regards,
Gert

Hallo John,
Wat een mooie, statige witte molen omgeven door zoveel groene kleuren en het witte huis met het oranje dak ernaast. Uitstekende scherpte ook. De witte lucht wordt aantrekkelijk gemaakt door de grotere wolken.

Hello John,
20° Celsius and sun, ideal weather for the bike trip. We still have a heat wave in Warsaw, yesterday we had 33°. Probably today it will be very hot too.
Nice view of this mill in Damme. Nice to see the horse cart. Delightful composition.

Hi John,
For a moment I thought you had been to Holland again. I like the repetition of the windows in the windmill and the fg canal and water lilies. Good sharpness as always. Tfs!

Hello John,
If ever a scene was reminiscent of Belgium of Holland, this has to be it! We do so identify windmills, flat land and canals with these regions.
I love how dominant the windmill is, how it stands proud against the sky.
You have created a fine sense of depth by including the canal side grasses in the f/g and the pretty, red-roofed house in the b/g.
The presence of cyclists and the horse-drawn vehicle bring the whole scene to life, very much in the present day.
My warm regards,
Bev :-)
No problems about you liking my w/s better. We are all different and have different tastes. I'm just glad you enjoyed looking. 😀

Dag John You show today a noble piece of Flanders historic architecture that constitutes a breath of fresh air, given the verdant natural domain it sits on. I could not see the mermaid though...maybe she was out for a refreshing bath in the water canal at foreground of your picture!! Professional depiction as usual. Met vrindelijke groeten

Ciao John
il mulino è molto bello, ma vedo un buon numero di soggetti interessati ai suoi piedi, cavalli, carrozze, bici, insomma, un bel paesaggio e un bel momento.

A moment well captured John.
We get to see horses grazing on the field, a carriage, bikers in red passing alongside of the typical and yet beautiful windmill. The canal offers added depth to the whole, charming picture.
Good afternoon,

Hi, John.
How have you been so far in the hot summer season?
Again, a picturesque, oil painting alike scene. I think, it must be not only Don Quixote who fought with the windmill, but the Flemish folks did the same. A pleasant to look at photograph, thanks for sharing the cultural heritage.
