Two islands, a photo from Southern Finland, South

Photographer's Note

When you are arriving to Helsinki harbour by boat, you can see these two islands very close to the harbour. The first island is called Valkosaari and the one behind it is called Luoto (Swedish Klippan). On the right background is the Kaivopuisto neighbourhood.

In Valkosaari is the green-roofed pavilion and restaurant of yacht club NJK (Nyl鋘dska Jaktklubben). In 1861 the constitution of NJK was approved by Czar Alexander II. In that same year NJK organised the first sailing competitions in Helsinki. At the time Finland was called the Grand Duchy of Finland and it was part of the Russian Empire. The present pavilion, designed by the architects Estlander and Settergren, was inaugurated in 1900 and has been carefully maintained. Today Valkosaari has berths for 125 boats and it is also one of the official guest harbours of Helsinki. The pavilion holds a public gourmet restaurant.

The red-roofed summer restaurant Klippan Palace is in Luoto island. The building itself is an attractive wooden villa, an archetypal representative of its era, with a history stretching back over a hundred years. There are similar buildings e.g. in the Stockholm archipelago and Zelenogorsk in Russia.

I took this photo from a boat, which left Helsinki at 7:30 pm. There were some broken ices near Helsinki but practically no ices in the open sea. So spring was around the corner, even that there was also fresh new snow on the ground from previous day snowing.

Very good Point of view on these little islands , with two slendid buildings , that provides some colors to this wintery landscape . The composition is fine , the sky , too .

A really interesting photo - especially in company with your excellent note. I like all these details one can detect here. You have had a wonderful light when taking this one. Are you sure that spring "up there" is "around the corner...?" I'll cross fingers!

Really a beautiful sight of these two small islands with outstanding buildings in them. This is just the kind of place and situation where I'd have shot hundreds of pictures. I love the sight of the land from a high point in a ship or boat and here the seascape is so fine and unusual for us. The yacht club seems really a high class club and I like both the architecture of it and of the restaurant in the other island.
I guess the Helsinki harbour is a natural one (I love them!) and not one protected by a jetty, and I'm amazed by the beauty of its surrounding. The light is very good and warm and the spectacle of all that ice on the water really so appealing.

despite the sunny weather this photo seems to be breathing with winter cold..
Anyway, I very much like the composition :) and I like the inclusion of these two buildings (red-roofed and green-roofed) at the same time: this creates a really very beautiful perspective!

I really like this one! The view is pretty attractive, interesting and beautiful!
The photo has excellent sharpness, depth of field, exposure, very nice and natural colors, a well chosen and priviledged high pov, a simple but pretty effective composition! Good proportionn of sky and land and this last one has so many details tha are nice and are perfectly placed in the frame: colorful buildings wiht interesting architecture, leafless trees and lots of snow and ice!

Hello Lasse.
A wonderful view that is beautifully captured, and your interesting notes added to make a great upload. The late winter sunlight is superbly rendered in this one, with excellent clarity and sharpness and good exposure of the snow, ice and sky. It's composed to give great depth, with the two islands and the mainland making a triangle. It still looks very wintry to me, with so much snow and ice even in late March. But I haven't been to Finland in winter, only for a week in summer many years ago.

Hello Lasse, I find your pictures and notes very informative.I am learning about a part of the world of which I know very little.
An excellent PoV with the two islands offset so that we can appreciate them both with all their details.Their roofs add a bit of colour to this scene of a cold place.The breaking ice is interesting.

browsing your gallery I saw some very nice pictures and this one is my favourite. Beautiful introduction with the ice sheets and the light reflection in the foreground. I also like the interesting building in snowy surrounding and the slightly clouded blue sky in the background. Lovely light and good sharpness with many details. Very well done.
