The Abbey of Bon Repos, a photo from Bretagne, West

Photographer's Note

Good Morning Everyone,

As promised, this is a photograph of the ruined Bon Repos Abbey which is across the river from from my previous photograph.

There is a long, tree lined pathway to the abbey which I will show as a workshop.

As you can tell, the weather was not wonderful for photography, but when you are on holiday, you have to take whatever conditions are available!

The setting is idyllic.
The Cistercian abbey of Bon-Repos still stands proudly, though partially ruined.

There is legend associated with the abbey: it is said that, while hunting in the region, Alan III de Rohan saw an apparition of the Virgin Mary, who asked him to create an abbey on the site. He did as instructed and Bon-Repos was founded in 1184. It was sold as a national property during the Revolution and was in ruins when a group of enthusiasts decided to bring it back to life in 1986.

For the last 25 years, the ruins of the abbey have been used as a great theatre to house a production tracing the history of Brittany. The production takes place in summer and is staged for several nights.

Hello Bev,
From a distance the abbey looks quite good, above average for ruins. It was obviously once a very impressive building, and even from this distance you had enough elements, like bushes and fences, to fill the area between you and the abbey. The main photo is the most interesting, but the WS is also nicely composed. The tree lined avenue, the low walls and the brown leaves on the ground give my eyes a pleasant ride towards the building.

The abbey had known better days, hope it will be restored one day to gain its ancient grandeur.
The Ws photo is wonderful, maybe you would choose to post as main photo on a different day, IMHO.

Hello Beverley,
A very nice view of the ruined abbey from a distance, which included the trees and smaller wooden buildings and stone walls as well. It resulted in a good and well-balanced composition. The light was nice and gentle, despite the cloudy day.

Hi Bev,a little in ruins but that in summer still relives the glories of the past, beautiful capture, despite the enemy light, really an interesting and elegant building, very beautiful also the walk that leads to the abbey during the passage between summer and Autumn. Yes I can see you had quite an English weather in France ha ha
The sky is white. But as you said, we need to have double standards for photos taken around where we live and those in travel, when we cannot easily come back to repeat the picture.
