Photographer's Note

Academie Street (District of Noailles), Marseille, Bouches-du-Rhone.

Despite Ramadan, the streets of the cosmopolitan neighborhood of Noailles, in the center of Marseille, teem with smells and flavors. To my surprise, the food is everywhere and neighborhood residents enjoy the morning to do their shopping to prepare the meal necessary to break the fast (though late, then we were in the month of July).

At a street corner, we run across this unexpected scene: a young man in full delivery of kalb el louz (or chamia) that can be translated into French as "almond heart." This is an Algerian semolina cake with an almond stuffing and a good dose of honey. This is a typical dish of Ramadan.

The photo was taken on the spot, so I had not really time to arrange the settings.
