Photographer's Note

Friche de la Belle de Mai, Marseille, Bouches-du-Rh鬾e district.

For my first visit to this city, I wanted to know a more intimate Marseille, far ultra-tourist places such as the Old Port and Notre Dame de la Garde. The Belle de Mai Wasteland (litteral translation for 揊riche) is one of these atypical places where beats the cultural life of Marseille. Since 1992, the old tobacco factory houses an important place of artistic creation and exhibition. Nearly 500 artists and producers work there.

A hauntingly creative energy emerges from the different buildings (some are shabby, others are ultra contemporary). An altermondialist atmosphere arounds us. The place, although owned by the city, is leased to a cooperative society of collective interest that offers an alternative management. Solidarity and social is the heart of its economy. Located in the heart of a popular neighborhood, the wasteland encourages projects toward the city and its inhabitants.

Beyond the creation area, it is also a very urban living place which combines photography exhibitions, skate park and place for outdoor concert. That day, the huge roof terrace was preparing to host a show. We could visit a beautiful exhibition of photographs accompanied by a student of the Arles National School of Photography who explained us the history of photography through some emblematic works of the exhibition. In WS, a close-up building where the exhibition was held.
