One in a series of pictures from the beautiful Southern French city of Aix-en-Provence.

Aix-en-Provence is a city and commune in the south of France, some 30 kilometres (19 miles) north of Marseille. It is in the region of Provence-Alpes-C魌e d'Azur, in the d閜artement of Bouches-du-Rh鬾e, of which it is a subprefecture. The population is approximately 143,000.; its inhabitants are called Aixois or, less commonly, Aquisextains.

Aix (Aquae Sextiae) was founded in 123 BC by the Roman consul Sextius Calvinus, who gave his name to its springs, following the destruction of the nearby Gallic oppidum at Entremont. In 102 BC it was the scene of the Battle of Aquae Sextiae when the Romans under Gaius Marius defeated the Cimbri and Teutones, resulting in mass suicide among the captured women; a story which passed into Roman legends of Germanic heroism.

In the 4th century AD it became the metropolis of Narbonensis Secunda. It was occupied by the Visigoths in 477. In the succeeding century, the town was repeatedly plundered by the Franks and Lombards, and was occupied by the Saracens in 731 and by Charles Martel in 737. During the Middle Ages it was made the capital of Provence The city reached its zenith during the period after the 12th century, when, under the houses of Barcelona/Aragon and Anjou, it became an artistic centre and seat of learning. It still has a major university and a large student population.

Aix passed to the crown of France with the rest of Provence in 1487, and in 1501 Louis XII established there the parliament of Provence, which existed until 1789 when it was abolished under the French Revolution. In the 17th and 18th centuries, the town was the seat of the Intendance of Provence.

Hello Stephen,

I was in Aix en Provence two months ago and I had no time to post pictures from there. Always the same problem for me :). Maybe I will be 'inspired", like it often happens. Lovely composition with the lady resting in the shadow of the fountain.

It's a very attractive photo from this obviously pleasant town (I haven't been there but everyone says so, not just you). It's a nice square with a pleasant atmosphere and the lady sitting by the fountain makes the difference that I am always looking for. I like the colours too.

Hi Stephen.
A very nice composition from a town I've not been to but would love to. You captured the perfect unsuspecting subject there, getting her water bottle out of her bag. Beautiful trees and lovely shadows on the stones of the square. I notice there's a lot of green and magenta fringing around the shadows - around the lady's shadow for example. There's a way of getting rid of those in Photoshop, but I don't know if you have that software.

I was going to remark it looks like a late Spring shot with all the greenery, but it was taken in June. Good colour, saturation and sharpness. The central fountain and statue make a great focal point. Tfs!

What a charming and inviting square with this statue and fountain in the middle surrounding by the fresh green trees. The sunlight brought out the colours at their best. The people add both a lively and peaceful mood.

Hello Stephen,

This looks like a very attractive city, providing some quiet ambience maybe in its outskirts.
I like how you have placed the statue, neatly linked to the surrounding trees and, of course, the lady extracting her water bottle really brings the scene to life.
The f/g shadows are very useful, suggesting the presence of trees at both sides of the relaxing square.
