Photographer's Note

The Valley Blanche is one of the most famous ski runs. It starts at the Aiguille du Midi and ends at Chamonix. It is the longest run in Europe at 22km (13.7 miles). This is serious skiing as can be seen from the ropes, harnesses and ice-axes. The run ends on the Mer de Glace or Sea of Ice. It's 7 km long, 1.200 km wide and 200 meters deep. This photograph shows the end of the glacier and glacial moraine can be clearly seen. If you look closely the vastness of the glacier can be recognised by the small ant like dots in the middle...skiers!

It was a snowy, overcast day but the weather lifted enough to get this picture.

Hi Lisa,
I first believed it was a BW photo clicking on the vignette, but I now see it's not, despite those conditions a good representation of the snaking glacier, with even a bit of sunshine at the top. It seems part of your note has been eaten ;-)

Hi, Lisa.

This is fantastic. A wonderful shot - such clarity in the foreground and mid-distance and yet those angry clouds above the distant mountains.

I know that when I am in a scene such as this, it is almost impossible to appreciate the scale of things - you are just in awe of the massive grandeur of the place and distances and sizes just seem so difficult to comprehend. So much more difficult is it, then, to capture that grandeur in a two-dimensional image.

You have done very well!
