Photographer's Note

The village of Eckweiler was situated only 400 m beside the runway of Pferdsfeld Airbase in the Hunsr點k uplands. Flight traffic noise became unbearable when the F-4F "Phantom" went into German service, so Eckweiler and neighbouring Pferdsfeld were abandoned and later torn down. Even the Soviet TV reported. Only two farms of Pferdsfeld and Eckweiler church remained intact, admidst former village streets which now look like overdimensioned farm tracks.

In 1997, Pferdsfeld Airbase was abandoned itself after the breakdown of the Warsaw Pact. They called it the "peace dividend".

But the villages did not come back again.
