Photographer's Note
This house is at a central spot of Ayia Marina, but the people who pass by, either on foot or on vehicles, pay attention to the narrow, busy street and seldom notice it. There's a high iron fence in front of it and I stuck my lens between two rusty bars to take a few photos. Before last summer, the vegetation in the front yard was so lush and high that you could sense the presence of a house behind without being able to actually see the facade.
It's been abandoned for about 20 years now. A friend told me that it belonged to Sophocles Venizelos, the brother of the iconic prime minister of the early 19th century Eleftherios Venizelos. His heirs gave it to the Municipality of Leros a couple of years ago, but I doubt that the crisis will allow for a restoration in the near future.
Thank you for visiting

Hi Ourania
Even in its ruined state, it's a beautiful house, and the colours retain a cheerful feeling. Hopefully one day it will see glory again. Would the state consider selling it to a private investorNd making it a protected building? Intetesting post.
Cheers

Ciao Ourania
qualche anno fa doveva essere proprio un bel palazzo, nel pieno del suo splendore.
Adesso è un bel soggetto per i fotografi appassionati del genere. Probabilmente diventa interessante anche in version e b&w.
Saluti
Carlo

Hello Ourania,
What a pity that such a beautiful house and with history is now abandoned and probably will never be in its former glory. It is picturesque and nice for beautiful photos. The vegetation takes it in possession. Nice iron balcony.
Good picture made through rusty bars.
Have a nice day

Hello Ourania,
Here's another rather sad reminder of a modern cultural heritage being lost. This was obviously a fine building, now the decay is maybe beyond repair. On the other hand this kind of decay, including the overgrown garden, offers more exciting photo opportunities than a modern building in perfect shape. Fading paint has a strange beauty.
Kind regards,
Gert

Hello Ourania,
It is funny how abandoned buildings like this are as photogenic as classical architecture in pristine condition if not more so. I like this image a lot. Your capture is well framed and benefits from superb colours and clarity. Although clearly deserted, it has lost none of its former elegance. Thanks for sharing.

Bonjour Ourania,
Cette maison a vraiment beaucoup besoin d'amour, mais elle offre des textures exceptionnelles.La végétation gagne lentement la bataille . La contre plongée donne une belle ampleur.
Amicalement

Kalispera Ourania,
Yet another abandoned house, or rather a mansion, that its grandeur days and probably vibrant life are already over.
The facades still shows how beautiful its design was. Fine light managed upon.
My best regards,

Hello Ourania,
Here is another candidate for a nice museum. I hope the municipality eventually has enough money to redeem this old house. In the mean time it will act as a magnet for photographers attracted to the dilapidated facade's rich colors and textures.
Regards,
MT
