Calm seas for 2010!, a photo from Lefkada, Ionian Islands

Photographer's Note

Photo taken on the same evening as my, ***CALMNESS*** photo. Same subject, same conditions, same shooting "problems". I hope that you wouldn't mind if I copied that "old" note:

"On my way to Preveza, I decided to make a short deviation, and visit the beautiful island of Lefkada, for the first time in my life, even if it was only for a couple of hours.

After crossing the bridge that connects the island with the mainland of Greece, to the left someone can see a huge marina for big yaghts, but what really caught my eye was a small "canal" for smaller boats on the right of the bridge.

The problem with this shot, was that there was a soft wind blowing, that caused a slight movement of the boat, so I couldn't use very long shutter speed. I had to try something diferent than my usual settings for this kind of photo, and used a wide aperture (f/5.6) and a high ISO number (800). Even so, the shutter speed was 2 seconds. The boat was slightly moving from left to right and vice versa. I noticed that when the boat reached the "peak" of its movement f.e. from left to right and before starting to move from right to left, it remained practically still for a moment. That's when I pushed the button."

Hello Hercules,
I remember your older post, and this one is as perfectly executed as the earlier one.
I like the composition with the diagonals of the ropes and the boat. Perfect sharpness, a beautiful light and excellent colours. I especially love the transition from the deep green to the deep blue. And a nice name for your shot. Smooth sailing to you, too!

For a calm sea ... this is a calm sea ! The feeling is perfect . And the composition is excellent . Of course , the reflections are wonderful , but I like especially the ones of the pieces of wood .

even if you show the same object, it does look totally different from the first capture.. though i do prefer the colors from the first capture, it磗 also a very fine take here..has still it磗 own charme and mood..
can remeber that place after crosssing the brigde from our own one-day-run around the island, beautiful memories..

WOW! What a shot. The colours are superb and your timing was impeccable. I like the light on both the ropes and the boats. The ropes lead the eye into the shot in a zig zag formation. Well done my friend. This going to my favourites.

Happy NEw Year Hercules! Calmness says it all about this photo. The reflections and stillness are incredibly good. As are the colours. I tried a shot like this but the very slight rocking of the boat caused it to lose sharpness. So I can appreciate how you've made a really difficult shot look so easy. Warm regards, Lisa

hello Hercules,
I quite like the dramatic contrasts between the light and dark, and perfect calm of the water adds to the somewhat ethereal mood of the scene. the rope in the foreground adds a nice natural frame, especially in combination with the line of the boats in the background. great moody shot, I like it.
