Vikos Gorge

The Vikos Gorge (Greek: Φαράγγι του Βίκου) is a gorge in the Pindus Mountains of northern Greece. It lies on the southern slopes of Mount Tymfi, with a length of about 20 km, depth ranging from 450 to 1600 m and a width ranging from 400 m only a few metres at its narrowest part.

Vikos is listed as the deepest gorge in the world by the Guinness Book of Records among others.

Location

The gorge is found in the core zone of the Vikos朅o鰏 National Park, in the Zagori region. It begins between the villages of Monodendri and Koukouli and ends near the village of Vikos (or Vitsiko).The gorge collects the waters of a number of small rivers and leads them into the Voidomatis River which forms in the gorge. The major part of Voidomatis is only seasonal, and is permanent only at the lowest part of the gorge.

Vikos is also a site of major scientific interest, because it is in almost virgin condition, it is a haven for endangered species and contains many and varied ecosystems.

Fantastic view of this gorge. With the deepest gorge in the world it is quite difficult, it depends on the definition. I have seen some gorges or canyons that were the deepest. How to measure it ? I am canyons and gorges collector, so I should visit it :). Magnificent composition.

An imposing sightb from high terrain down to the trough with the creek stream very clearly shown.

The scenery is breathtaking and picturesque with fantastic colours of the various mountainsides. The river at the bottom of the gorge goes very nicely on a diagonal.

Fantastic image with a beautiful composition which gives a lot of depth. I'm guessing that this is one of those places where a photo doesn't do the place justice but it does look impressive here. It's a fine pic documenting the site and of course accompanied by informative narrative. Excellent shot, Congrats

I like the splash of rust red in the cliff at right, contrasting with the cyan trail of the river far below in the canyon. Good sharpness and high pov. Tfs!

Hi Danos,

The river or stream is sending my eye toward the mountains in the background which is giving depth to the scene. The point of view is showing the details of mountains. The good luminosity is enhancing the colors. Have a nice day.

The first thing that strikes me is that the water down into the gorge is incredibly blue.
The area looks pretty rough but oh so beautiful!
It was probably a long hike and a difficult climb to get to that viewpoint.

this would be a nice place to be hidden during the invasions in antiquity. haha.
amazing deep valley with many levels of vegetation. the colors of the waters in the river are very interesting. TFS this marvelous corner, not so much known from greece.
