Photographer's Note
Well now, -the- standard postcard of Zakynthos view.
Photographed very often, but still, you can't affort to not take pictures yourself, ofcourse. I shared a view on the wreck before, a very different view .
Now another POV, -the view-, from above, taken from a little platform, that is hanging on a cliff above. The shot is taken with my compact @ 35mm equivalent, so the drop is really as big as you see, not an effect due to extreme wide angle. To reach this view from above, follow the road going southwest from Volimes, there should be singposts for Navagio over there. Coming down the road there is a restaurant near the edge, which was closed when I was there. Well...maybe it was even abandoned, the toilets we're still accessable on the back of it, but I have never(!) seen such AWFUL toilets in my life! Everything was ruined, broken and dirty there. So I guess it's abandoned. Now cats found shelter there, atleast there we're a few cats when I was there. Walking from the restaurant to the edge of the cliff, you see a platform hanging on it. (jjbach shot the platform, find it in Navagio section). From this platform, you get this stunning view. Being build strong, it can hold a lot of photographers at a time. You'll see it a lot on photocards and calendars when you're in touristic Greece.
The beach is accessable only by boat, from Porto Vromi to the south, from Agios Nikolaos Port in Volimes to the north-east. Also a lot of cruises coming from Zakynthos Town harbour, anchor there for a while.
How did this ship come there? I wrote about that on
the other post, but I'll feature it here again for you :
[info]
Here's the story...
In 1980, a freighter was pursued by the Greek Navy. The crew were suspected of smuggling contraband and the navy chased the ship through the Ionian sea.
Allegedly there was 'wine, tobacco and women' on board and the chase came to an abrupt end when the ship ran aground in stormy weather on the coast to the north of the island at Porto Vromi. [actually more north from Porto Vromi, but you can catch a boat @ Vromi, costs 12 euro if it reminds me well.]
It's a spectacular sight, whether you take a boat trip and swim ashore, or take the serpentine road to the viewing platform above the cliffs.
Zante Shipwreck Timeline:-
1937 - St. Bedan built in Scotts Bowling Yard in Glasgow for J & A Gardner. Launched on Thursday, January 14, 1937 from Glasgow.
1964 - Sold to Greek owners, M. Gigilinis and S. Kakassinas of Thessaloniki and renamed Meropi.
1966 - Renamed Charis.
1975 - Sold by N.S. Kalfas to P. Lisikatos of Piraeus renamed Panagiotis.
October 1980 - Run aground on Zakynthos and abandoned.
[information sources: zanteguru.com & wikipedia]
(in some way, some resources mention 1983 as wrecking date, but as Zanteguru and Wikipedia say 1980, I believe those..)

Black dots on the walls are not due to compression, that is just vegetation growing on the cliff, on some part the vegetation is larger and won't appear as dots.

Hi Emiel!
Amazing point of view!! All in this photo is superb: subject, composition and colors... This beach is spectacular, and, even if light conditions seems not the best, this is a great shot.

Hi Emiel,
Congratulations about the photo.Nice POV, colours, and depth. The note is very nice and useful too. Just to add something about the story of "Navagio" is that the shipwreck had a positive influence to the beach enviroment: it causes the sand to gather more and more.
Also the captain of the ship is still alive ,living somwhere in Europe outside greece to avoid his arrest (as ia saw on a tv documentary few years ago he was living in Netherlands)

Emiel,

hey...crazy view...i've though first that you were climbing the cliffs to get to the position. the colors are great, if not the best part of the whole thing, of course except the POV as mentioned! but, did you do some noise reduction? it seems to me that there is not much details on the cliffs in the bacground. the note is phenomenal! Very original point of view, interesting subject and note. What I like most is the colors - contrast of white sand and dark blue sea, also a transition from shallow to deep water. Ship is nicely framed by stone textures with some inclusions of grass. Nice compo with rock separating "outer" and "inner" sea. Thanks for sharing. Cheers - Vilius

Hello Emiel,
mmm, this country is soo photogenic!Look at those colors! There is no match for that blue! Your point of view limits the perspective you could give to this one. All you could do was open it as wide as possible and shoot. But still, you took such a nice picture of this paradise! the contrast of the sand and rock with the STRONG blue is very nice. the only thing disturbing for me is the green branches on the right, as if this part of the picture was useless..
Very nice work Emiel,
Marc

Emiel,
Spectacular shot, and excellent narrative. So this is not in the Aegean, but in the Ionian Sea, west of the mainland. The idea of standing above so far up on a platform suspended above oblivion is a bit scar, however. What focal lens was the lens, is it extremely wide angle, or is the drop as big as it seems.
Incidentally, the 1600-mm lense you commented about in my photo "Bubble about to Burst," was a Questar telescope, only 3 1/2 inches (8.9 cm) in diameter, and about 35-cm long. But with different eyepieces, it gave focal lengths of 3200-mm and 6400-mm, sufficient magnification to make out to count eye lashes a block away. Regards, Bulent

As other have commented, you have a wonderful natural perspective here, and you have got the most out of those azure Greek seas as in other examples of your work. A dramatic image, but perhaps could have benefited from a slightly wider angle.

Hello Emiel,
Bravo !

Hi Emiel:
I can see why this is such a popular shot. All the same, yours is great. You have the right amount of light--not too strong, but enough to show the details. The color of the water is beautiful as well. The water on the other side of the cliff kind of threw me off at first (I wasn't sure what it was), but I like its inclusion. It might also be a cool picture to crop it out, but I don't think it hurts the picture. Nice job.

The lovely, small beach in the center is the key point. The rock looks dangerous from one site, but from the other - it is wonderful. How did you take it? Super!

All right, as promised, I do my first comment on your photos and I choose my favorite one! First of all, I just wondered if it was dangerous taking this photo. It really makes me feel dizzy! The POV is so high! I can imagine you leaning over a fence and nearly fall! I like the contrast between the incredible blue of the sea and the white of the sand. The cliff seems to be a huge wall parting the sea in two (that's why I prefer this one compared with this with a narrower angle). And the fact that there is almost no one on the beach is a good thing too! I love wild and calm places not disturbed by human activity.
Well done!
Sabrina.

Hi Emiel - indeed one of the most phenomenal views in Greece, such a pretty cove, good timing with few excursionists visible, enough of them to give scale but not enough to overwhelm the beach (I want to go back to take another photo of this, this time armed with my 10mm. lens so I don't have to stitch anything.)

Hi Emiel. A well known famous shot of the wreck. I have been here about 12 years ago by boat. The sun comes round and lights up the water like no other I have seen. Just beautiful. But the water was freezing ;)) If I ever go back I will make the effort to take this myself.
