Alone, a photo from Donegal, North

Photographer's Note

A solitary boat moored in the mouth of the River Eske, Donegal, as the river is soon to enter the sea.

I was on a river cruise for the afternoon, taking in the scenery of this small corner of Ireland.

If I were to take this picture again, I would not place the boat slap bang in the centre of the frame; probably taken on the spur of the moment!

Hello Jean,
A beautiful view of this calm lake on a wonderful and sunny day, which actually reminds me of the days I spent in Ireland two years ago. The water reflects the sailboat very nicely and the rolling hills of the Emerald Island make a great backdrop.

Oh, yes, it is so easy to be wise after the event! I have lost count of the number of times I've uploaded a picture only to look at it and realise that it wasn't quite as good as I had thought it was! But in your case, I believe this photograph is quite delightful as it is.

O.K., the pedants would talk about "rules" of composition but rules are made to be broken. Even so, if you wanted (and you have plenty of pixels here to play with), you could crop off maybe a fifth or a sixth from the left side and that would put the mast of your boat on the left "third" - and that might please the critics, but, quite honestly, I love this just as it is: it's nicely balanced, the light and colours are beautifully soft, your exposure perfect and the details and sharpness are excellent.

Hello Jean,
It's a beautifully calm view of the boat floating among the reflected clouds on a lovely day in early summer.
I agree with John that you could have cropped the boat more to the left side, but also that its place in the middle doesn't matter at all. But generally I think that the advantages of cropping is the most important thing I have learned while being active on TE. Most often I use it to get rid of disturbing details on the sides, but often also to improve the balance of a composition.

Retrospect always makes things seem so easy!

Yes, I see what you mean; it would have been perfectly possible to crop this photograph from the left and remove some of the sky, without losing the balance but it wouldn't necessarily improve upon the atmosphere of utter tranquility, which just oozes from the scene.

You are right, the picture becomes more balanced and exciting when the boat is placed more off-centre.

Jean, this sailing boat was moored at the mouth of the river. The water was very calm here. A peaceful landscape appears around the boat and in the bg. Nice reflection. Fine colors, good sharpness, interesting photo note, regards.

A landscape that transmits tranquility with those still waters, capturing beautiful reflections, but at the same time a bit of solitude, with that perspective with nobody, only the small boat anchored in the middle of the river.
Point of view, sharpness, luminosity, color and the chosen composition are excellent.
